In one of the strangest comebacks in literary history, L.J. Smith is using fan fiction to reclaim her own series.

When Alloy Entertainment fired L.J. Smith from the popular young-adult book series "The Vampire Diaries" and replaced her with a ghostwriter three years ago, a civil war broke out among fans. One camp swore fealty to the characters and embraced the new books, which still feature Ms. Smith's name prominently on the cover as the series' creator. The other, more vocal faction sided with Ms. Smith and boycotted the ghostwritten novels.

"I would not read those books if they were the last books on earth," said Christina Crowley, a 35-year-old substitute teacher in Riverview, Mich., and a staunch L.J. Smith fan. "I didn't want to read her characters written by someone else."

Now, in one of the stranger comebacks in literary history, Ms. Smith is independently resurrecting her stories about the adolescent undead. She's publishing her own version of "The Vampire Diaries" digitally on Amazon, as fan fiction, creating a parallel fictional universe that many hard-core fans regard as more legitimate than the official canon.

"I wanted to finish the story," Ms. Smith said. "So many people still wrote to me constantly saying, can you just tell me how it ends?"

Fan fiction, or works by amateur writers that feature characters and settings from their favorite books, TV shows, movies and comics, has thrived online for decades. But it's always existed in a sort of legal gray zone. Selling stories based on other people's copyrighted creations is illegal, unless it's a clear parody, which is protected as free speech under the First Amendment. It's also permissible if the characters and setting are altered so much that the story no longer seems derivative.

In the past, most publishers and studios quietly tolerated fan fiction, or saw it as free promotion, as long as fan writers didn't try to sell their work.

But that was before the astonishing success of "Fifty Shades of Grey." E.L. James's erotic trilogy—which originated as fan fiction inspired by Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series—has sold more than 100 million copies in two years. Now, entertainment companies are searching for new ways to make money off fan writing and harness the next potential breakout hit.

on Friday, 16 August 2013 16:16. Posted in In the Media

Not only did exes Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev take home surfboards for Choice TV Actor and Actress in a Fantasy/Sci-Fi series for their work in The Vampire Diaries, but the show itself was honored by an overall win for Choice TV Show in the same category!

It was a tough race, considering TVD was up against the likes of Once Upon a Time, Supernatural, Beauty and the Beast, and Arrow. OUaT has a big fan following, but most notably, TVD won out over the long standing Supernatural which is in its 9th season, while TVD just rounded out its 4th.

On Twitter, the stars were openly ecstatic about their win. Kat Graham (Bonnie)quickly thanked the voters before turning her attention to more important (?) matters, saying, “We thank you to everyone who voted! Love you! Breaking bad in an hour and a half, time to get focused!!”

Ian Somerhalder (Damon) jumped in early with a prediction of his win, saying, “Something tells me that I'm going to see a bunch of awesome teens in just a little bit.I might even get to go surfing this evening...Maybe;),” then later showed some love, saying, “I'm so grateful and so in love with you damn Teens- very cool day. Thank you #TCA2013 for creating this.”

Congratulations, everyone!

The Vampire Diaries cast always seems to be a close knit bunch but it appears that has changed since actress Kat Graham threatened to kill her co-star Nina Dobrev.

However, the star was of course only joking as a result of the pair playing the Newlywed game where they were tested on how well they knew each other. As the actresses were set questions such as favourite karaoke song and favourite snack, they were also quizzed on who each of their celebrity crushes were.

Having been asked to reveal who Kat's crush is, Nina who admitted to taking a risk, went on to say: "Oh God, she might kill me for saying this but Jeff Goldblum."
