March 2009

Hey all,

Here's the latest from Lisa (L. J. Smith and the Dark(ish) Side) ...
- New FAQ Page!
- New Booklist Entry!

and ...

New Stories!
Here are a couple of a sweet little stories to soothe the troubled--the first is rated G, and has no violence in it at all.  Please enjoy Elena a year before she even met Stefan in Matt & Elena: First Date.  You can also reach this story by going to the Stories Section, where there is a brief description.

The second story is called Bonnie & Damon: After Hours.  You can also reach this story by going to the Stories Section, where there is a brief description.

The BlogFest
I'll be participating in Simon & Schuster's BlogFest 2009, which means that I'll be available to answer questions and discuss issues live for one or two days sometime in mid-March or early April.  I'll let you know more about this as the time comes nearer and I learn more about it.  It should be fun for everyone!

Nightfall
Vampire Diaries: The Return: Nightfall came out on February 10, 2009 in the U.S.  (I'm sorry--I don't have the info for other countries, yet).  This is the first book in the trilogy I wanted to call DAMON because it focuses on Damon and has many passages from his rather skewed point of view.  I'm in the middle of writing the second book in the series, Shadow Souls, right now, and I'm loving it twice as much as I loved writing Nightfall!  I started out just writing a synopsis of the book, but it turned into a manuscript as I became so interested in some scenes that I just couldn't stop writing!  Now, this does not often happen to me.  The third book in the series will be called Midnight.

Again, for those who haven't gotten the message yet, Nightfall is the first (and darkest) book in a trilogy.  I have gotten maybe several hundred emails asking me if there will be a Vampire Diaries book after Nightfall.  But if you were puzzled, or even angry, at not understanding, it's not your fault.  The publishers put out a book (I had nothing to do with this) that NOWHERE said that it was "to be continued" or was "the first of three books."  They made an egregious error--and I apologize deeply and humbly on their behalf.

The Vampire Diaries TV Pilot
Yes, it is true: the script has been approved to make a pilot for The Vampire Diaries.  This doesn't mean that TVD will be a TV series: first it has to go head to head with the other pilots that are being made for next fall.  Here is what I know so far: the CW picked it up to make a pilot, and one of the executive producers (and writers) for it is Kevin Williamson, who wrote Dawson's Creek, Scream, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.  In any case, if you're a dead ringer for Elena, Stefan, Bonnie, or any of the other characters, this might be a good time to visit sunny southern California and see if they're casting.

By the Way
There are some people who write and ask me why I don't make thus-and-such of my books into a movie.  The reason I don't is because I'm only a humble writer--I have no power to make TV shows or movies.  As may be understood from the paragraph above, it takes a producer who makes movies (or TV shows) as a business; a director; a script-writer; and many other professionals to make a TV series or movie.  Writers like me just sit with laptops and write manuscripts that become books--if they're lucky.   But I do appreciate your kind interest!

Night World 3
The third of the Night World omnibus books is scheduled to come out on April 7.  It will contain the books Huntress, Black Dawn, and Witchlight, and will introduce the concept of the Wild Powers:

One from the land of kings long forgotten;
One from the hearth which still holds the spark;
One from the Day World where two eyes are watching;
One from the twilight to be one with the dark.

The Wild Powers were born to save the world from being destroyed by blood and darkness.   This omnibus chronicles the discovery of three of them.

Strange Fate
I'm so sorry; I can't give a solid delivery date for this book because I don't know of one yet.  I am still writing it; I am still estimating that it will be from around 1,000 to 1,200 pages.  It's still about Sarah Strange and a very hot love triangle between a girl (Sarah), a vampire, and a shapeshifter.  It's by far the most complicated book I've undertaken since it includes a plot in the future and one in the deep past, but it's also a book that I'm in love with.  There will be a teaser from it in the end of Night World 3.

Teasers
Here is a teaser for Nightfall.  As soon as I can get them up, there will be teasers from Strange Fate and Shadow Souls as well.  Hope you enjoy them!

Thank you
Thank you for being so kind as to have read my e-mail newsblast!  Thank you for all the supportive e-mail.  I hope to be able to pay a bit more attention to my website in the next year, but I've got a writing schedule that keeps me nailed to a keyboard most of every day.  At least I love my work.  And I love getting mail or e-mail; just please understand how busy I am (like now, trying to produce both Strange Fate and Shadow Souls before summer . . . aaargh!)

Remember that, no matter how dark the night, every L.J. Smith trilogy has a happy ending.  But first you have to make it through the night . . .
