First of all, I want to thank all the wonderful people who have entered the Art Contest. You've all done terrific jobs and I really appreciate the work that went into them. However, there's one inescapable fact, which is that there are only about ten entries so far.

Therefore I am officially changing the rules to the Art Contest. As of now, artists may submit any number of pieces they like. There will still be five distinct winners picked by Forum members to go on to the site-wide poll (Forum members would vote for an artist instead of for a particular entry) but we'll be voting on a body of work rather than a single picture in some cases.

Thank all of you artists again, and feel free to submit as many pieces of art as you like.

I’m very excited to announce this Fan Art Contest because I know many of my readers have been asking about such a contest and there is so much amazing talent that’s been displayed on the Forum. Whether you’ve already shared your fan art or you’ve been waiting for just the right moment, now is your chance to showcase your best work!

This contest is different from all of the previous contests because the winner will be chosen by you—that is to say everyone who visits this site and wishes to vote. There will be four phases to this contest.

Phase 1: From now until August 1, 2013 contestants—meaning anyone in the world—will submit one piece of fan art to this thread. Please do not use this thread for conversations. There will be a separate thread for that. See under Questions below*.

Phase 2: After August 1, 2013, I’ll make a post on this thread announcing that the contest is closed and voting can begin. Voting will now begin. Each person on the Forum can make a post listing their top three choices. You do not have to list these choices in any order. Voting will be open until September 1, 2013.

Phase 3: The top five finalists will be announced on this thread and on the site by the Administrator. All five finalists should send an email to info@ljanesmith.net acknowledging that they know they are finalists (this will also be explained on the site at the time of the posting). In the email you send, please include your name, full address and phone number. If you do not send your information to me within seven days the next runner up will be chosen as a finalist.

The top five finalists will have their artwork posted on the main page of this site and a poll will be created in the right column of the page. For that poll, everyone is allowed to vote once every 24 hours. DO NOT attempt to vote more than that. Even if the system allows it, it will make a record of it and your vote will be discarded. This poll will close on September 30, 2013.

Phase 4: Each of the Five(5) Finalists will receive a BOOKPLATE AUTOGRAPHED BY L.J. SMITH that they can affix in a book of their choice. The Grand Prize Winner (whoever receives the most votes in the poll) will either receive an ART KIT PLUS $650 GIFT CERTIFICATE at The Crystal Realm(U.S. resident) or a GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR $1,000 at The Crystal Realm(non-U.S. resident) .

What type of artwork is acceptable?

You can enter anything that is your original work and based on any of the books written by me, L. J. Smith. It can be a drawing, painting, photo-manipulation, computer created, sculpture, etc. You just need to be able to post a picture of it on this thread. Even if you have uploaded the picture elsewhere on this site, you must re-post it here in order to enter the contest.

Can I enter fan art from the TV shows?
Nope. No characters from the TV shows, no collages of the stars--this contest is for fan art from the books only.

*Can I enter more than one piece? Each contestant can only enter one piece of artwork. However, feel free to create your own posts/polls, to get some opinions about which piece you should enter. It’s time for a new contest, and this one is a golden—solid gold, in fact—oldie. Trivia question: what immortal words are inscribed on the inside of the magical ring Julian gives to Jenny in The Forbidden Game?

Yeah, “choose” is spelled the way it was back in the 16th century, because this is a poesy ring, which The Crystal Realm explains refers to “a ring that was popular during medieval and Renaissance times as a gift from lover to betrothed upon marriage. Quotations from courtship stories were inscribed, usually on the inside of the ring. Shakespeare popularized the rings by mentioning them in several of his plays.”

And The Crystal Realm is where the ring will be coming from and where you can find all sorts of gorgeous baubles, both affordable and . . . well, the kind you vow to get when you can afford a fabulous diamond.

This contest will be a little different from the past ring contests, because Mandira, the fabulous guru at The Crystal Realm will be the one sending the lucky winner the prize so that she can have the ring made to the winner’s exact specifications. Want to wear it on your middle or index finger? No problem. Have tiny hands that a standard size 6 ring falls off of? Got you covered. This ring will be guaranteed to fit you—or your beloved—perfectly!

But don’t forget . . . a promise on this ring is uniquely binding, as readers will see when I can get to write The Forbidden Game: Rematch, the oft-requested sequel to The Forbidden Game.

You voted in the poll and you’ve made yourselves clear. Clear as mud, actually! The contest finished with the Stella blue enamel and diamonds pendant necklace and the Stella diamond rim pendant necklace in pretty much a dead tie.

What to do? Well, I really felt I had no choice, so I got one of each, and this contest will be held in two places simultaneously. But before I go into that, let’s review what you’ve decided on for the prizes.

The first Circle Daybreak Symbol, which started out ahead, but gradually lost ground to the blue enamel kicker is the Stella diamond rim. Patterned after the gold eight-pronged stars featured on the Basilica San Marco in Venice, the pendant is 18k gold with round brilliant diamonds. It comes on a 16" chain. The carat total weight of the diamonds is .08. It was designed by the brilliant Tiffany & Co. artist Ms. Paloma Picasso. It costs $1,950.00.

You can easily imagine this as a Circle Daybreak Symbol, as it is a star-sun inside a circle—a sort of visual pun on Circle Daybreak.

The second Circle Daybreak Symbol, which gained popularity steadily as the poll went on, is also patterned after the gold eight-pronged stars featured on the Basilica San Marco in Venice. Its pendant is 18k gold with blue enamel finish and round brilliant diamonds. (These form the star shape.) It also comes on a 16" chain, with a diamond carat total weight of .08. Naturally, this also is an original design by Ms. Paloma Picasso. It also costs $1,950.00.

This also would make a lovely symbol for Circle Daybreak as it appears to be the sun-star against a dawn sky (representing daybreak in the morning) or against a dark sky (to represent the Night World out of which Circle Daybreak emerged).

Now, on to the details of the contest.

WHO CAN ENTER?
First, one winner will be picked out of the Forum. This is another reason for some of you lurkers to come in and introduce yourself, as the Forum numbers are much smaller than the site visitor numbers. All you need to do is join (no one will ever email you—unless it’s me with the news that you’ve won the contest—and I have no idea of how to sell or spread your email address and wouldn’t do it if I did know!). All you have to do is sign up and make one little post, like “Me, too!” or “My name is Evangelina Tangerina Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff. Howdy!” That’s all it takes and you, too, can become a fortunate Forum member, and I’ll take it as kindness done to me. :-)

Another winner will be picked from anyone who sends me an email as instructed below.

And, yes, I will ship worldwide, and yes, Forum members may also enter in this way. So if you’re a Forum member you get two chances to win.

After saying that I will ship worldwide, I must add that if there are any customs, duties, taxes, etc. resulting from the mailing of your prize, you will be responsible for paying them. At last a new contest! And an extraordinarily precious one, too!

The top winner in this contest will have to determine if she/he is a good witch or a bad witch. And then they will be sent plenty of Tiffany’s Paloma Picasso bling so they can strut their stuff among the baddest (or the most blessed) of their fellow magic makers.

THE BAD WITCH

Faye, Maya, Blaise . . . they would all love this glorious loot. Of course we have to start out with that archetypical and over-the-top 20-carat teardrop necklace by Paloma Picasso, in black onyx. This is perhaps the most graceful of natural shapes and 20 carats is a lot of it. The necklace makes a statement and the statement is “I’m gorgeous.” It says it few decibels louder when paired with the matching Paloma Piccaso 20-carat teardrop earrings.

Next comes a bracelet in black onyx beads with a delicate silver shell dangling from it. Exquisite. And no witch would possibly venture outside without her own very witchy Moroccan design in matching black onyx and silver. Both are Paloma Picasso classics.

THE GOOD WITCH

If you thought that good witches wear boring jewelry, think again. Paloma Picasso once more comes to the rescue of girls like gentle Cassie, and shows that 20-carats of blue chalcedony in a teardrop pendant shape garners involuntary “oooo”s from the audience. Match that cloudy, soft (but very powerful) blue stone with two perfect chalcedony teardrops for the ears, and you have . . . voila! the ideal frame for your own gorgeous features.

The good witch bracelet (by Paloma Picasso) is simply hypnotic, and deeply magical, combining chalcedony beads with amazonites, and moonstones. THE CONTEST

This contest is inspired by THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ cute little red-haired pixie, who loves all things Celtic, and who learned at her grandmother’s knee about Celtic knots and designs and about Claddagh rings. Never heard of them? You’re about to get a gorgeous education.

GRAND PRIZE 14K GOLD CLADDAGH RINGTHE PRIZES

Twenty (yes, 20) lucky eligible Forum Members (See WHO CAN ENTER below) will each get to pick from a dazzling array of Tara’s Diary Celtic stacking rings and Claddagh rings from such terrific stores as THE CRYSTAL REALM, BIDDY MURPHY, TIPPERARY AT TARA and LINDA CLIFFORD! The “how” will be a simple first come, first served, and the GRAND PRIZE is a Genuine Irish 14K gold Claddagh ring from THE CRYSTAL REALM.

But first, what is a Claddagh ring? Well, according to Wicki—er I mean, Bonnie’s Grandmother, The Claddagh ring (Irish: fáinne Chladaigh) is a traditional Irish ring given as a token of friendship, love, or marriage. The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside the city of Galway. The ring was first produced in the 17th century during the reign of William and Mary, though elements of the design date to the late Roman period.

(She was an erudite old lady, wasn’t she?) She goes on to say that:

The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown).

But the Claddagh ring has come to mean simply a friendship or relationship ring, celebrating one’s love, friendship and loyalty to anyone or anything.

As for Tara’s Diary Celtic stacking rings—well, these are not Claddagh rings, but oh, can they be beautiful and symbolic! Some of the rings have Celtic knot designs, some have “jewels,” some have hearts, trinity knots, pearls, or simple sayings. The great thing about them is that you can play with them, wearing them in any order you want. NOTICE: NOT ALL STACKING RINGS ARE PICTURED YET! SOME OF THE BEST SETS HAVEN’T ARRIVED YET, SO WATCH THIS SPACE FOR ADDITIONS AS THEY COME IN!
