I just finished reading VD:Midnight and I really liked it. I just couldn't put the book down. Only your books can keep me from sleeping, studing and doing nothing else but read them till I've finished them. Even though I'm really sad. I can't believe you won't write VD anymore!I feel so bad because I know that I'm not gonna read what that ghostwriter will write, cuz I don't care, even If she wrote better than you, she's not you !!! And will never write the way you have. My favourite character is Damon and I was really upset when he died, I cried for nearly half an hour :(And now I'm so sad that there are no more books to read. It's frustrating, beacause those books really helped me, only the idea of reading them made me happy. What can I do now???:(:( I've started reading 'NightWorld" anyway and I'm loving the first book. Whatever happens L.J.Smith you just keep writing and I'll read every single book of yours.

I'd do anything if there was sth to do so you could be allowed to write VD again. I'll be so happy if that happens. To end it I wanna thank you for everything, I wanna thank you for existing and sharing your thoughts with us. I wanna thank u for being so nice to your fans and bothering to reply us. You are an adorable person.
I beg your pardon if I did any mistake, since I'm not from America or UK. I wish you all the best !!! :)

I can't thank you enough for your kind words about The Vampire Diaries. I must admit that I get very misty-eyed when I think of another person writing them--someone with no idea of what plot points or character changes or romances I had planned for The Hunters arc. It particularly hurts that I can't write the endgame, and that even I will never know how everyone wound up. Sometimes I think it's a horrible dream that the books are no longer mine, and I find myself saying to friends, "I want my baby back!"

I am proud that the series has been published in 36 languages and many more countries so far, but that also increases the ache in my heart, because I know that in many countries people will not even understand that I am no longer writing the series. I want to tell about Damon helping to deliver Caroline's twins in an emergency. I want to write about Stefan and Elena's passionate embrace which leaves Elena white-faced and in need of a transfusion, and how Damon and Bonnie hunt down the true culprit. I want to show the fire which flies between Elena and Damon, and the deep love that Elena has for Stefan at the same time! I want to know how my characters will resolve their "love quadrangle." darn it!

Perhaps, someday, I will be able to do these things. For now, I thank you for your kindness and I want to say that you are adorable, too! Your English is excellent and I hope you are proud of yourself for that!

Thank u so much. I could say this over and over. I nearly cried when I read what you wrote to me. You helped me so much. I am so happy. That's what you do. You make so many people happy with your books and your words. :)))You must feel great. That's what I wanna do, too. I wanna help people and make them smile. That's why I'd like to be a writer.
I really believe YOUR books will be given back to you. I will spread the word that you aren't writing them as much as I can. Noone will read them. Publishers will give them back to you. And if not it'll be sad that the story finished with Midnidght, but I will learn to admit it. And your other books will help me. There are so many books of you to read that I won't have time to worry. By the way I'm nearly finishing the first NightWorld book: Secret Vampire. ^_^

Hey Lisa, I've been a fan of your books for years :-) I love them, i think i have read everyone and no doubt, The Forbidden Game (1, 2 and 3) Are my favourites!
I love them, i fell in love when i first read them. Your writting is amazing, the way you make us see Julian, as if we are in the story. That's why i love you.
The third book made me cry
I saw on your blog that you are writting a sequel, i screamed and jumped round the room :D I've wished for another for years.

I love all of your book, my favourite Night World, are the first two.

I couldn't believe they took Vampire Diaries away from you. How dare they! That's your baby, and it's nothing without you!

Hi Lisa! I really love your books especially Night World all the forbidden love (GENIUS!) My favorite couples are Rashel and Quinn, Ash and Mary-Lynette, Thierry and Hannah almost all of them but my No.1 is Rashel aand Quinn how you write their story is brilliant all their pains just went through me but I mostly love the times when they think about each other or even talk to each other I have one question though at the story The Chosen Quinn asked Rashel if he will ever know who killed his mother, will he? I'm just eager to know how will the two them find the one who killed Quinn's mother! and most of all you changed my life before I never even liked books about vampires but because of Night World I changed my mind the series thought me how to move on to not focus in my past and how you should just let go of your hatred and start all over again I send you my greatest gratitude for writing awesome books. p.s. I even had so many dreams about your characters in the series I couldn't sleep

First forgive me for misspelling your name--the program won't let me change it! But thank you so much, Ezrah. Your comments really touched my heart. I appreciate your kind words about the Night World series, and I promise you that you will see Rashel and Quinn as a couple and separately in Strange Fate. I have to admit that I have a great respect for Quinn (and I'd better have, if I know what's good for me!) and that I love him and Rashel very much. I suppose that was why writing The Chosen was so easy and fun for me. I promise that someday not too far away I will write a follow up story for Rashel and Quinn and answer all questions the book didn't pin down. There's also a story up already (under STORIES on the menu, called "Thicker Than Water" which involves Rashel and Quinn around the time of the Apocalypse.

Thank you so much for all your compliments--I' m always delighted when anyone says they read more because of my books. That's the ultimate for any author, as is your aspiration to write yourself.

You are quite right--we need a good picture of Quinn, and perhaps a tweaked one of Rashel. I'll see if I can talk Jan into it (he prefers new characters and beautiful girls rather than guys like Quinn!) Whether I can or not, I promise that of course Quinn is gorgeou s. But have you ever wondered what everyday life must be like for them, especially in the beginning? Quinn is the second-oldest vampire in the series so far (after Thierry) and Rashel, however competent is still a teenager when they find they are soulmates. I have to admit that I myself like the scene in which they allow their minds to blend completely, because it carries the message of the entire Night World series in one sentence. Rashel sees the beauty of Quinn's mind, and realizes that if he, who committed so many terrible deeds, can still have a soul with so much potential for redemption, that a normal person has the hidden ability to become a saint.

That is what the Night World is all about. Thank you for recognizing it.

Thank you for this greatest compliment of all. If you feel my stories rather than see them, I know that I have done my job well. It is every author's most earnest hope to have others feel their books. I thank you very humbly and very, very sincerely--it's difficult to say how much this means. I feel tongue-tied, because for me only the greatest writers I know make me feel their stories. I don't think I'm quite in that category, but I thank you humbly anyway.

First Stephanie Myer and now L.J. Smith, I'm thinking it must have something to do with vampires. It's just like a song on the radio that has been replayed over and over for months, it's getting old. But I love vampires and other intriguing fictional characters, they are just fun things to read or watch. I am sad that Smith has decided to stop writing Vampire Diaries (VAMPIRE DIARIES!!!!!!! Nooooo!!!!!!!!! !!No more mysteries, no more Stephan, no more DAMON!!!- as you can see I love this book and Damon happens to be my favorite character).I have not read the last book of Vampire Diaries but I am hoping to get the chance to read it. A story has to end somewhere and I geuss this is Smith's way of ending it, but then again I haven't read her last book so for all I know she could have ended it with a cliff hanger. Anyway if you are reading this L.J.Smith, I am sad that you have ended your book but I will live and I look foward to reading the last book of the series.

Hi Tina,
Just so you know L.J. did not choose to stop writing VD. It was taken from her and given to a ghostwriter. This was allowed to happen because of a “work for hire” clause in the original contract she signed in the ‘90s when she really didn’t understand what it meant. There is a longer explanation in guestbook 2 and on her blog, if you are interested. I recommend reading Midnight. It was a fabulous book. The only problem is that it will leave you wanting more. The next book, Phantom, was written by L.J., but the publishers told the ghostwriter to rewrite it. However, it will still say “Created by” L.J. Smith. I won’t be reading it because a) I don’t think it will be any good and b) I think it was very underhanded move by Alloy to do what they did. Of course, you are free to decide for yourself what you will read. I just wanted to make sure you knew the facts.

Ok what???? I think I am going to take up your suggestion about getting all my facts because I am so confused! For instance, what's a ghost writer? Does this mean they will stop showing vampire diaries on TV 'cause that is the first show/movie that was based on a book which the show/ movie was actually GOOD- as in I can't take my eyes off good. I was so excited about reading the new book but now I am just dissapointed that after Midnight it won't be the same because it won't be written by the same author or sort of like that (still need to brush up on my facts). This is sooo depressing and I am so sorry I had no idea, ok now I am sad!!!!! Why??? I still want to read the book though because I LOVE the series!!!! Oh I am so sorry and thanks so much Christina (hey that's my name) for informing me of atleast some of the facts (the rest I will look up myself). I love to write but I think I've written (or typed) enough today so goodbye and I am really sorrry about what happened L.J.!!! :(

I just looked over her blog and the "inside story" and now I understand everything! To think that every thing I have read that I thought was written by another author was just the opposite! Though my books don't say "created by L.J. Smith" on the back cover they say alloy entertainment. I never read the stefan diaries and I don't plan on it (too much reading for me any way lol I love to read). Aww poor Smith, this really stinks! ESpecially since she can't do anything about it! A paper and a writing utensil can be the most ordinary innocent objects, but just like words can inflict pain, they can be the most powerful and hazardous things ever (examples: forclosures, a jury's verdict, a forged signature, and an unfair buissiness contract.)I am so dissapointed!! Anyway thanks for everything Christina ( this is too funny I feel like I am talking to myself) and I am a big fan L.J. Smith, I am really sorry this happenend to you!

I am exceedingly happy that you think I did a good job of explaining the situation. Having you even suggests that I might be a writer is the highest praise imaginable. I like to write for my own entertainment, but I never show my work to anyone. I’m a perfectionist and don’t really have the thick-skin necessary for writing for other people.

Thank you for giving so much of yourself. Everything I read of yours whether it’s in a book or online speaks right to my heart. There is no other author that I feel connected to in that way. Although Chistina has already answered you very kindly and thoroughly, I can't help adding my own voice.

When I read that you thought I had decided to give up my children, the Vampire Diaries books, all the blood drained from my head and face and my fingers went numb. I tell you this because I've never had such a reaction (although nobody has ever said those words to me before), but I felt as if I might faint. Very odd.

I must protest on my own behalf that I did not decide to stop writing TVD. In fact, I fought tooth and nail and I begged, pleaded and tried to bargain with Alloy Entertainment and HarprerTeen. I did everything I could think of and I am still numb and flabbergasted over the idea of someone else takng my characters and writing foreign things about them.

I'll explain once more why someone was able to take my books away from me. It is because of my very first Vampire Diaries contract, signed over twenty years ago that the powers which a writer normally has (like continuing to write her own books) were given to others in a clause that said the books were "work for hire." I was a young, naive author and I had a very bad agent who didn't explain what those words meant. The more fool I.

I hope you will indeed read Midnight, but please know that it was never meant to be the last book in the series. Also, I wrote the next book in the series, Phantom, but it has been heavily rewritten by the ghostwriter.

Sorry, Christina, I just had to say my peice, too. I hope that any reader who knows the true situatioin will disseminate the information as you have.

Dear Lisa,

I read your recent interview with deep sympathy for all that has happened regarding TVD. I have loved Night World and the characters you have written since I was 12. I read them time and again. Then you used a deeply distressing analogy between being fired and rape at knife point. Being fired is being fired; being raped is being raped. Using such an analogy can be deeply traumatic and unsettling for readers, whilst downright misleading for others. You may have personal knowledge of someone who has been a victim of rape at knife point, but this does not justify the analogy. However awful you feel, I find it simply ill-thought through, belittling, demeaning and unacceptable. I chose to post this here rather than writing a personal email because I believe it is worth consideration by your readers. Not to begin an argument (far from it). But to have awareness of the potential impact regarding how we speak (even innocently) about sexual violence.

I don't think L.J. would ever intentionally try to offend anyone. That was just her way of trying to explain how she feels.

[quote name="Christina Strobel"]I don't think L.J. would ever intentionally try to offend anyone. That was just her way of trying to explain how she feels.

I would also like to add that L.J.’s analogy was not comparing being fired to being raped. She was comparing the feeling of being fired and then having other people blame her for quitting to the feeling rape victims have when they are blamed for what happened to them. It’s the whole “blame the victim” mentality. Since rape is a crime that a lot of times ignorant people try to blame on the victim, that is likely why she made that comparison.

Lisa,
I am so sorry for everything you have been through recently and in your past. It breaks my heart that such terrible things could happen to such a kind, caring person. The fact that you continue to spread messages of love and redemption through your books is a testament to your strength of character. Please, always continue to speak from your heart and never allow yourself to become a projection of what others want you to be. You are my hero and that is not a title I bestow on whim.

I totally agree with you, Beth. I hope she sees it and apologize, because it was an awful analogy. The Vampire Diaries isn't your whole carreer, L. J. Smith. You've written more than 20 books that are not from The Vampire Diaries trilogies, so... Rape is a serious subject.Accordi ng to the National Organization for Women, nationally, three women are killed by an intimate partner every day. More than 600 are raped or sexually assaulted, so it's really serious and sad. Being fired is awful, too. But it's easier to move on when you have so many great books that are not VD

I am very sorry if the comment disturbed you. As I have said to Beth the victim I spoke of was myself, and therefore I feel that I am entitled to compare the two experiences. What I really should have done was been more straightforward . I feel that the reluctance to talk about rape is a further victimization of the women who are accused of being "disturbing."

I think you have every right to compare two experiences that you have personally undergone (and I'm so very sorry that you've had to experience such traumas). You know your own feelings better than anyone else possibly could, and you are entitled to discuss your own experiences. I think a lot of people's initial reaction was due to thinking that you were appropriating someone else's experience of rape to make a point; not comparing two of your own experiences.

I was sexually abused in the past, and while I think the impact on me was stronger than a 'creative rape' would be, I can absolutely understand the comparison. Wondering what you did wrong, what you could or should have done differently, why you weren't good enough, how someone who said they loved you can turn around and hurt you to get whatever they want; or else, why a stranger would prey on you in particular, and not someone else...

But just as your body will always be yours, so will your characters.

As it turned out, Deep Waters got to be 130 pages long and was nowhere near the ending. It also developed a secondary story, with Black John returning as a teenager, and I gave in to the fact that it was no novella but a full book. Sorry. But the Admin. will be posting several stories, beginning this month.
And should Alloy Entertainment deny me the right to publish the sequel to Secret Circle, it will end up here--all of it. It's busily writing itself inside my head right now. In fact, I have so many books percolating there that I feel as if I might make coffee any moment. :)

Are you going to write a Forbidden Game 2? I have read all of your books so far and that one has been my favorite, along with the Vampire Diaries. It is so unfair that they took away your books. No one is going to write them as you do. They won't make the readers cry when Damon announces his love for Elena yet again or laugh out loud when he does something wrong. You are an extraordinary writer and I love reading your books the most. It's like losing a friend when I finish it. Julian and Damon are my favorites. :) I hope you have an amazing day! :)

My only hope is IF the girl who carves his name back in was a Lover - then she be a Sophia / Sofia!

Hi Rachel,
I'm so sorry to hear that you were a victim yourself. That is horrible.

But as for not wanting to offend, I think it's one of the greatest joys in life to offend people. Not in a bad way, but in a way that turns a mirror on the world and says "What? You don't like what you see? This is how it is, and you don't like it?" This is the kind of attitude some of the greatest people had, such as Mark Twain.

Because it doesn't matter if people like or dislike your comment, if indeed you mean what you say and are passionate enough about it to not care what other people think, then in my eyes it's worth gold.

And yes i was a victim but i dont want to reveal much about my personal life, i can only say it was someone i thought i loved. I think that Lisa's situation may apply to rape just as much as anything, she wasnt over dramatizing it- whatever fans might think- but we have to put ourselves in her shoes. Isnt losing something you've worked on you whole life, loved, cherished, and raised like a baby- taken away and trashed similiar to having your life trashed upon by someone you loved and treated as a brother and went to them for advice and guidance suddenly force you to do something you never dreamed he would want to do to you? Or if you didnt know the person, someone you never knew and will never see again(maybe) who has no regard for who you might be or how he might hurt you, uses you?

Hi Karen,
Here is the deal with Vampire Diaries. L.J. did not choose to stop writing VD. It was taken from her and given to a ghostwriter. This was allowed to happen because of a “work for hire” clause in the original contract she signed in the ‘90s when she really didn’t understand what it meant. There is a longer explanation further up in this guestbook and on her blog, if you are interested. Midnight was written fully by L.J., and when she wrote it she thought she would be continuing the series.

It is important that we spread the word that future Vampire Diaries from Phantom on will not be written by L.J. Smith and that they were taken from her and given to a ghostwriter. I would like to ask anyone who is reading this to visit the websites where they usually order books and place a comment explaining what happened under reviews/discuss ions of Phantom. If you are in a country that has Vampire Diaries translated into another language, post in that language as well. Thank you so much for your help.

@Sophia-Can you take care of the UK? I know Amazon will not let you post a review unless you buy the book  However, you can start a discussion. Once you do check back because sometimes people have questions. I think I have the US under control, except for Borders. I’ve tried posting, but it never shows up. When I talked to my mother about it, she must've thought I was being overly dramatic about it but she knows that I have loved and adored your books throughout the years.I also was able to get her and my sister to read The Forbidden Game and they fell in love with the characters. My sister is finally starting the Vampire Diaries series on her I-Pad. Which I couldn't do because there is something about having the weight of a book in your hand that nothing can compare to. Sorry, but I digress, I told my mom that it must feel like a part of your heart was ripped away from you. I know that is how I would feel if my books, my characters, were ripped away from me so suddenly. You have my deepest and sincere apologies, I hope this experience is not too disheartening and I know you are clever enough to find your way out of this bind :-) I love you L.J., you have been an inspiration to me throughout all of these years

Congratulations Lisa,
I’m so glad that the San Francisco Book Review gave Midnight their top rating. You deserve it.

The ‘parted ways’ comment by the Hollywood Reporter really irked me, but I find it encouraging that Alloy/Harper have clearly underestimated the extent of fan loyalties. When Phantom hits shelves they won’t be able to ignore us anymore. We will finally be able to speak in the only language they seem to understand (money). In the end, they will learn that their own arrogance and greed has lead to the collapse of their series.

Sorry to hear about your mum. I’ll defiantly keep her in my prayers.

What I did was log onto Amazon and search Hunters Phantom. When you are on the Phantom page scroll down to about the middle of the page. It will say “Customer Discussions.” Click the “Start New Discussion” button and you are good to go. I just cut and pasted my reply to Tina from this guestbook and made a couple minor changes. I also did a Google search of Hunters Phantom (if you just do Phantom you’ll get a lot of stuff you don’t need). I was able to find a lot of other book selling sites that way. Since we both come from English speaking countries, I’m not sure if that would be productive for you. A lot of the sites I went to serve multiple countries. If you think of anything else we can do, let me know.

Also, thought you might like to know that Alloy has a new website with new contact info. Letters probably end up some junk mail abyss, but it felt good to write it.

I meant definitely not defiantly. Spell check doesn't catch everything, lol.

Anyway, I hope all is well.

Here is the email to Alloy.

The link on their site kept messing up, so you may just want to use your own email account.

Dear Lisa, I'm so, so sorry to hear about the ghostwriter takeover of The Vampire Diaries. I don't understand how the publishers can't realize that basically, nothing will be "canon" any more. I don't want to read someone else's fanfiction of your work, I want to read what the characters *really* do and say and how they change. You have an overarching plot; I always thought ghostwriters were for things like the "Sweet Valley Twins" series, where there's no overarching plot, the characters never age, they do about twenty times the things a normal person would ever have time for, and there's no character development. One girl's responsible and smart, one's a total flake, apparently forever, and that's all a ghostwriter really needs to know. But your stories are STORIES. No one knows what will happen to the characters yet, but you're the only person who I believe can genuinely discover what they will do. I would rather the series end with one more book by you than continue indefinitely.

Hi L.J.

I've been reading along in the guestbook and I just wanted to take a moment to say that I support you and have nothing but respect for you. I was not offended or disturbed by the analogy you used. You had something precious taken from you on both counts and I hope all of your fans love and support hold you through this difficult time. You've helped me so much through my teen years by giving me a safe and magical place in your books, I know that other fans have also found peace in your books. Let's all band together and get our favorite author through this. We all know TVD will never be the same again and as far as I'm concerned Midnight was the last TVD book. L.J. you have my support in anything you write. I can't wait to read more Secret Circle books!

:-? Hi
PLEASE understand facts b4 coming on guestbook.
lisa is upset with her works being stolen.
VD was given to a ghostwriter and Stefans diaries are based on the works of lisa, not by her - it cuts even deep if the publishers were alloy/harper
She hates thier betrayal!
dont write positive of people who hurt her on this site.
sorry but had 2 say
thanx

I've just wanted to thank you for your great job. now I'm an addict to your novels- reading one after another. it's quite hard to find them in mid-east europe but I keep trying. I'd started with 'vampire diaries' and I felt in love with damon. can you tell me where do you get the ideas for your bayronic characters? julian from "the forbidden game" is a good example for it. oh, you have a great website. I did't know so many fantastic people are here. I just wanted to thank in fact 'cause you've made my world a better place with yours books :)
p.s. I totaly love dialogs in your writing- there are quite elaborate and i can't go further since I've go through them at least 3 times, I mean the lovers' talk. brilliant thing! I read the novels in original, translations are rather dull.

Hi Sofia,
How’s your mom?

I did Amazon, but you can do the Amazon uk. I figured they would be set up the same, so I tried to walk you through it.

Everyone please sign these petitions to protest the decision of using a ghostwriter for VD.

Also, let Alloy know how you feel.

Hi Valentine,
I’m sorry to tell you, but L.J. will not be able to tell you who is on the cover of Phantom. Sadly, she will not be allowed to write any more Vampire Diaries. Alloy took them away from her and hired a ghostwriter. L.J. is very upset by this and fought long and hard to stop it. Phantom will say “Created by” L.J. Smith, but it was not written by her.

If you would share this information on any sites you visit, that would be greatly appreciated.

Dear L.J. Smith. I'm so sorry about you not being able to write the rest of your series TVD. It breaks my heart I don't know how to put words to the way I feel for your lose. And thats what it is, its a lose. I love your books they have helped me through some tough times, long days siting in doctors offices it gave me a way to exscept. The ring that Bonnie was given from Lady Uma reminds me of my grandmothers opal ring that I wear now. Its unqie & nobody has a ring like it.
I dont get why they think they can take something away not just from you but also from your fans. I think that they should no that its your fans that want you to be writing the books and not some ghostwriter. I want to fight for you give you a fair chance at what you deserve. I can't stand not knowng how you would continue your book how you would end it. So pls how can I help you. Let your fans fight for you.

Hi Stephy,

Some of us have brainstormed ways to help. There are several things you can do.

1) Sign these petitions to protest the decision of using a ghostwriter for VD.

http://twitition.com/hqnr9 This one is on Twitter

http://www.petitiononline.com/ljsmith/petition.html This one lets you leave comments

2) Let Alloy know how you feel.

3) Spread the word about what really happened on sites that sell or discuss The Vampire Diaries. If you can read/write a language other than English please tell others in that language, too.

4) Tell everyone you know offline about the situation.

5) Boycott Phantom- This just might be the only voice Alloy hears.
