Just for fun, I put snugglebunny's picture of Meredith, Bonnie and Elena going to the gala in The Vampire Diaries: Shadow Souls alongside my own pics of the girls gowns that I found on the Web while I was writing the book. I think there's a remarkable resemblance. Good job, snugglebunny!

I have been reading your books (and re-reading to keep me satiated until Strange Fate) for almost 20 years. I have really cherished your work and missed you during your absence. The biggest joy, though, has been introducing my students (oh yeah, I'm a teacher) to your books. Prior to the re-releases of The Vampire Diaries, I had a waiting list of students who wanted to borrow my copies. They have even helped open communication between myself and students who wouldn't have talked to me otherwise. So, again, thank you for what you have given us. I look forward (anxiously, I must say) for the next installment.

Hi, I've just been looking through this site and saw your message and I wanted to reply to it. Ever since I was really young, I have really enjoyed reading the Nightworld series and keep waiting for it to come out each year. Also, I'm a teacher to and have used during English and narrative writing. All the children love the books:-) and they really inspire the kids to think and write about stories in a fun away...Wrote this message, because your message reminded me of my own experiences.

img Q&A R To the teachers
You don’t know how pleased and humbly proud I am to hear that not one, but two teachers have made use of my books with their students. As a former public school teacher myself, I know the joy and excitement of helping kids learn to read and to love reading. The thought that my books contributed in some small way to the same cause has me walking on air.  Bless you for letting me know!  ~ Lisa

img Q&A Q Hi Lisa,
I'm Maddie and I was wondering if you have any helpful tips to an aspiring author such as myself. I look up to you as an accomplished author. If you have any helpful ideas on time management (I'm a busy teenager), organizing ideas, plot, and coming up with titles, names for characters. If you can even give me the slightest advice, it would really help me out. Thanks much. ~ Maddie

img Q&A A "TEN QUICKIE WRITING TIPS"

Hi Maddie—

You sound as if you have a fine grasp of grammar and spelling, which is another very important point. My advice, given your abilities, would be:

1. Try to write something every day, even if it’s only a short entry in your diary. If you want to be disciplined/ serious/ organized about this write at the same time every day. Get up twenty minutes earlier and write until you need to use the bathroom. Or write each day after your homework/ housework is done, and while your cell phone is off and you’re as safe as you can be from interruption.

2. Use your “waiting time” (time waiting for the bus to arrive, the bath to fill with water, your favorite new app to download) to think about stories or books you’d like to write. Imagine yourself as the heroine. Write in the third person in your head, so that you’re thinking, “Maddie saw the lonely Victorian house as a bolt of lightning illuminated the night in a brilliant flash.” Okay, so that’s really corny. Think up something better.

3. You can start with either a couple of characters or with a situation. Want to write a romance? Figure out what your hero and heroine look like and some basic facts about their personalities. Now think of why their love is impossible/ forbidden/ seriously challenged. Finally think of a unique way for them to meet. Now imagine that first meeting and try to see it through the heroine’s eyes. Feel yourself become her. What does she think of the hero or bad boy when they meet. Good looks aren’t enough, aren’t a reason to feel something special about a guy. What does he do to piss her off but intrigue her/ make her heart stir with a novel sensation?

4. Or start with a situation. C.S. Lewis said he began the CHRONICLES OF NARNIA because he got a picture in his head of a little girl holding hands with a faun. That became Lucy and Mr. Tumnus. Think of an interesting picture. When I was ten, I thought of seven cousins all perched on a (two-person) bike at the same time. Then I took each person in the picture and made her/ him a character. Soon I was writing a story about the very different cousins. Some of those characters became Phillip of SECRET VAMPIRE, Jeanne of BLACK DAWN, and Iliana of WITCHLIGHT.

5. It’s no trouble finding names. Google “beautiful names for baby girls” or “Indian names for baby girls” or “Celtic” or “Unique” or any country you find romantic. Your only trouble then will be choosing just one name from the lists. The Internet is invaluable.

6. As for titles, brainstorm and write them down as you do. You and your friends will soon be Googling to make sure your title wasn’t published last year by someone else. Just keep forcing yourself to write nonsense and look up synonyms of the words in the nonsense, and you’ll find a title you love.

7. If you get an idea you like, drop everything and write it down. Yep, scribble it on that napkin, then hang on to the precious napkin. Tell your BFF about it and brainstorm more about it with her. I have gotten/ developed some of my best ideas from talking with friends. Even if nothing they say strikes you, you may find yourself having an inspiration as you say, “No, that won’t work because they have to _______________!”

8. Once you have a book/ story/ play idea, get out your laptop or go to your desktop and force yourself to document all you know about it. What color are the heroine’s eyes? What does she aspire to be in life? What is the unique key to your tale? What three things make the bad boy/ hero so bad/ so irresistible? What secret does the heroine keep from the world/ herself/ her BFF?

9. Above all, know how you want your story to end before you commit to it. How does your heroine help the world and what is the price she pays? What happens to the bad boy/ hero at the end of the book? What makes your ending unique? You don’t need to know the endgame of the series if that’s what you’re writing (even though it’s best to brainstorm that, too) but you have to know how your book works out. Is it a tragedy? Is it happily ever after? Whichever, even if you favor works like WUTHERING HEIGHTS (Holy wandering ghosts, Batman!) or Hamlet ( . . . the rest is silence . . .) it should have a touch of something inspiring at the dénouement. Or at least that’s my formula, and I’m the one writing this how-to guide. What spiritual nerve do you want to touch in your readers before the words THE END?

10. And in the end, how has the heroine changed? That’s what novels, in particular, are about. Someone has to learn a life lesson or become a different sort of person by the end of your book. Unless you want a heroine that stays two-dimensional throughout the book or series, she should have learned something really important that transforms her, with each and every book you write about her. If your heroine doesn’t change or grow, you’re going to be stuck telling the same story over and over. While some readers enjoy this, you’re going to get sick of it mighty quick. Challenge your readers; make their minds stretch. Doesn’t that feel good?

So there you are, ten writing tips, from a simple, easy beginning to a very demanding end. Oh, there is much more advice I could give. But you just wanted a bit of a nudge, right? Right. Off you go to pen the Great American Novel!

Cheers,
Lisa

img Q&A QI just finished Midnight which was very good and exciting I wish it did not end only because Damon is alive. Will there be another book soon?  ~Josie

img Q&A A Dear Josie—
I am sorry to tell you that I cannot write any more VAMPIRE DIARIES books.  There is already another book out called VAMPIRE DIARIES: PHANTOM but it is not by me.  It is by a ghostwriter.  She will be writing the other books in the VAMPIRE DIARIES series now.  I really, really loved that series and wanted so much and fought so hard to write it, but I signed a contract twenty years ago when I was a young and naïve writer and now I am forbidden to write the VAMPIRE DIARIES anymore.  I am so very sorry.

Cheers,
Lisa

img Q&A Q Dear L. J. Smith,
If you are not working on another project do you think you would be willing to write a fourth book for The Secret Circle. The Secret Circle is my favorite book series of yours and I really want to know what happens to Nick (he was my favorite character). Please consider, I also know that many other fans would love it if you added to The Secret Circle. Sincerely,   ~ Summer

img Q&A A Dear Summer—
There is a new SECRET CIRCLE book coming out in March called THE DIVIDE, but it is not by me.  I cannot say more than that I signed a contract over twenty years ago.  I can’t say any more than that.  I’m sorry.

Cheers,
Lisa

img Q&A Q Hello Ms. Smith,
I have not finished reading your original books . . . I was actually writing is that I found an error in the Stefan's Diaries. . .  ~ Tery

img Q&A A Dear Tery
I have nothing in the least to do with writing STEFAN’S DIARIES.  They are not written by any of the people named on the front.  They are written by a ghostwriter, who does not get credit.  If you had read more of the original VAMPIRE DIARIES books I think you would recognize the difference in the style of writing.  Each writer has their own original style.  Also I’d have to be a magic-worker to write STEFAN’S DIARIES, which are about the background of the TV show (and have nothing to do with my background for the original books) and simultaneously to have written the genuine original VAMPIRE DIARIES books SHADOW SOULS and MIDNIGHT—and also be working on NIGHT WORLD: STRANGE FATE.

Now, because of a contract I signed over twenty years ago, I am not allowed even to write more of the original VAMPIRE DIARIES books, although I desperately wish I could, and always assumed I would.

Have you read any of my other books besides VAMPIRE DIARIES?  (Gentle hint.)  This may help familiarize you with my writing style.

Cheers!
Lisa

img Q&A Q Hello,
I' am a huge fan of the night world series and could probably recite most of the stories in the series by heart. I'am wondering if strange fate is ever going to be released. I personally feel an announcement should be made to all the fans waiting for the book as there is a lot of rumours going around about the release of the book.  Anywho ciao :)  ~ Ciao Vee—

img Q&A A STRANGE FATE will come out when I'm finished writing it.  It is a very, very long book that shows the endgame for nearly all the main characters you have seen in the NIGHT WORLD series as Ash helps them.  Plus, it tells the story of Sarah Strange and her two soulmates a (one of whom is the last Wild Power, Kierlan Drache!)  I promise that I am working on it right now, and the only thing distracting me is one other book that I am also working on, called THE LAST LULLABY, which was originally part of STRANGE FATE (you can see a preview of it on my website in the Stories section), but which got so big it had to be a book by itself.  And answering fans.  That is fairly distracting, although I love you!

Thank you so much for your patience.  I know you want STRANGE FATE right away, but while you are waiting maybe you could try some of my other books?  (Hint, hint)

Cheers!
Lisa

img Q&A Q When are you going to publish the Forbidden Game sequel?  Thanks!  ~ Paige

img Q&A A Dear Paige—
Whoa.   I haven't even started that book yet.  First, I have to finish the last book of the NIGHT WORLD series, STRANGE FATE, and a book that was originally part of STRANGE FATE, but grew so big that I moved it to become its own novel, which is called THE LAST LULLABY.  After I have finished both these books I will start THE FORBIDDEN GAME: REMATCH.

So I guess the answer is NFAW.  Not For A While.  Have you read all my other works yet?

Cheers!
Lisa

img Q&A Q Hello,
You've probably been asked this a million times before but i've been reading your books allot, and was really curious when I noticed, some elements from the book of Mabinogion an ancient welsh book, which I also love, so I was just asking whether it has any relation to the story of Blodeuwedd?  And...... a cheeky question, is it really true that there may be a new secret circle book? :)  Thanks for taking the time to read my email,  ~ Daniel :)

img Q&A A Hi Daniel—
You are quiet right about the origins of Blodeuwedd—I first read about her when I lived in England with a Welsh family who bought me all sorts of Welsh storybooks.  The Mabinogion was among them. I found Blodeuwedd fascinating as a teenager, but when I wrote her into THE VAMPIRE DIARIES she took on a distinctly dark tone.  I guess part of it was my realization that a girl made out of flowers could have no heart—that she was basically a vegetable.

That’s not a cheeky question about THE SECRET CIRCLE.  There is a new book coming out in hardback in March.  But it is not by me.  It is by another writer.  I cannot say any more about this subject due to a contract I signed twenty years ago.  I really can’t say another word about it.  I’m very sorry.

Thank you for taking the time to write to me.

Cheers!
Lisa

Hi!
I just wanted to ask you if there's going to be a sequel to DV. In wikipedia it says it's titled Blindsight, but it's not mentioned here, so I just wanted to know if it's true? If it it, I can't wait for it! I really loved that series, also Forbidden Game. They are my favorite of your work! I love Vampire Diaries, but I cannot get myself to read the ones written by the ghost writer. It wouldn't feel right to support them, nor do I think the series will be the same if they're not written by you.

As far as The Vampire Diaries go, unfortunately Miss Smith no longer writes them. Any book that was published after The Return: Midnight was and will be written by another author/ghostwri ter. I am sorry that we can't help you, we don't discuss the ghost written books story lines on the site out of respect for Miss Smith. She is not allowed to speak on the mater anymore than she already has.

I went into a bookstore store a year agao and the emplpyee told me that the strange fate was not going to be published at all, because L.J was not writing any more of these fictioned story books. I read the comment above, i'd really like to maybe if L.J could give us a a rough guess of finishing the book??

#strangefate. L.J said that STRANGE FATE will come out when she's done writing it and its taking long because she's preoccupied by THE LAST LULLABY which was originally part of strange fate but was too vast so it became a book by itself. :) Hope that helped

I would love to see elena with damon for some crazy reason. I thought that, in the books, they had more passion together than her & stephen. It seemed to me that damon loved her more. as for the tv series, i wanted her and stephen to be happy but now im also leaning more to damon and elena being together. I think damon is hotter than stephen anyway and that is def who id want to end up with!

Lisa doesn't know what the ghostwriter will do because she is not being told or allowed to give input in any way. Of course, they will not be the same as if Lisa had written them. How can some amateur compete with Lisa's talent to captivate us from the first page and make us feel the emotions of the characters? Myself and many of her other fans are boycotting all ghostwritten books. We refuse to support Alloy's idiotic decision to replace Lisa with a ghostwriter. And we will not be discussing ghostwritten books on this site.

As for the Black Rose Contest, it is open to everyone. You being from the UK doesn't disqualify you. However, you must have posted the minimum posts on Forum (one post a month for two consecutive months.)

Actually, I feel like bad guys never win is something that should definitely be challenged. And anyways, you can always turn a bad guy into something better by considering him "misunderstood" . There's always more to bad guys than you'd think.

I absolutely adore your novels Ms. Smith. But I would be incredibly happy if you would just consider writting a sequel to Quinn and Rashel's story because it's just that good. I cannot get enough of Quinn and their chemistry together. Very well written and there is not one scene I would change. Please consider!

Thank u very much for your books each and every 1 of them I can't ever decide which 1 is the best.
u wrote that in the 10th book of night world Sarah will have two soul mates and I was wondering how could it be since from what i remember u wrote at least once-in the secret vampire u wrote:"In the Night World there's this idea called the soul mate principle. It says that every person has one
Soul mate out there, just one. And that person is perfect for you and is your destiny." and that's what made it so special and different from real life. but if u say that some1 can have more than 1 soul mate than what makes the soul mate principle different from the ordinary love we know? and that's too bad because it was perfect the way it was please don't change especially not in the last book it won't be magical anymore please consider it. Please! And thank u again.

I'm hoping that's something she's going to cover in the next book. Perhaps one of the guys she thinks of isn't truly her soul mate, although she thinks he is, and then maybe the one that is refused gets someone better, someone really similar or something to the original girl.

Perhaps it will be a case of a split soul in two people, say twins or something. I also think that the one soul mate principle should stay that, one, but it could be an interesting exploration of the principle. But hopefully with a rational ending.

Hi, i am a fan of your Night World, Dark Visions, and Forbidden Game novels, and i was reading over a few of the comments here and came across the topic of Ghost writers, i am assuming that they are writers who are continuing one of your series. I was wondering how i could tell if one of your books is written by yourself, or a "ghostwriter" and if any of your series in the future are going to be continued by persons other than yourself.
Thanks, Luisa :)

The ghostwritten books will say "created by L.J. Smith" and/or have more than one name on the cover. The writing style will obviously be very different and inferior to what we are used to reading in a book written by L.J. Smith. The only series that are being ghostwritten are The Vampire Diaries (anything after Midnight and The Secret Circle (anything after the original trilogy). The books you mentioned are not affected by the ghostwriter issue because they are with a different publisher.

Hello!
I know that you can't write sequels to some books because they are now ghostwritten. I also know that you get a lot of comments and questions about the sequels. So I wanted to ask which series can you still write sequels to? And which series do you plan to continue in the future? Not which sequels are you writing right now, but which of your lovely series we have hopes of seeing more of. BTW I'm a huge fan and have read all your books exept the night series which I an reading right now. Please keep writing!

The series that Lisa can still write sequels to are Dark Visions, Night World, The Night of the Solstice/Heart of Valor, and The Forbidden Game.

After she finishes writing the books she is currently working on she plans to write a sequel to The Forbidden Game. If you haven't joined the Forum yet, you should. We have lots of interesting discussions over there. Lisa also stops by when she can to answer questions. She has posted a synopsis of The Forbidden Game sequel. It sounds amazing. :-)

Thanks, this helps. I didn't know that Phantom was by a different writer because he/she is trying to write in the style of the original books. It's crazy that the publishers don't want people to know who wrote them and that the real author doesn't get credit. V. C. Andrews' books were continued by ghostwriters, but that was because she died.

I love the Dragon Lance series and have read many different books from different authors but I always go back to the original team I started with. It is my own opinion that if someone is going to enjoy an author, then they should read all of their books. If they are going to enjoy a series, then they should show praise to all the authors of the series, ghost or not. I hope to thank Lisa for creating this books, and knowledge her to be a great writer for me. I will treasure the book series she gave for me to enjoy. Quoting Christina Crowley:

There is nothing she can do about this now. Hopefully, any aspiring authors out there hearing about this situation will be cautious about contracts they sign and not end up in similar circumstances.

I'm so sorry your Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle series were taken from you. You should consider self-publishing a new series in the future. You'd have complete creative control, and keep most of the profits. With your huge ready-made fan base, you'd make a killing, and you could tell your stories the way you've always wanted to. Many authors are doing it and finding greater success than they did with publishers...an d those authors didn't have a fraction of the fan base you do. Anyway, good luck!

I emailed L.J Smith a question and she sent me a email back! Thought I'd share!

What was your main influence that made you want to become a writer?

Hi Jennifer,

There was none. Really. I wanted to be a storyteller for as long as I can remember. When I was three I made up storied inside my head and I made up poems(very bad ones) before I could write. My mother wrote down what I said. I loved my books and vinyl record player with stories on each side of the record, and once when I was very small and I didn't like the story my father was making up, I told him to "turn it over", Certain that on Side B there was a better story.

It all culminated in my writing a poem of which my first grade teacher approved. I was vindicated. I was going to become a writer. So I did.

Cheers!

Lisa

You have mentioned in previous answers about certain books you cannot write,(now written by ghost writer) because of your contract you had many years ago, as an aspiring writer is that how it is when an writer sells his/her novels there is never any way to get the rights back?

+6 # Hi KeishaChristina Crowley 2012-02-19 08:22
I'll see if I can answer your question. It depends on the type of contract you sign. Once you sign your rights away, there is no way to get them back. But you don't have to sign a contract that gives away your rights as an author in order to get published.

It is important to be very careful and make sure you understand what each part of a contract means before signing it. That was the problem that Lisa ran into. She didn't realize what she was giving up and her agent didn't explain it either. Contracts like that are meant to look enticing with promises of higher sales and more marketing behind the books. What new author wouldn't jump at the idea of seeing their books in bookstores everywhere?

Fortunately, Lisa only signed this type of contract with two of her series, The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle. All of her other books and series have contracts that give her full author rights. These series will not be given to ghostwriters.

I hope I've answered your question. Good luck with your writing.

Hello,

I am a big fan of Night World (especially Dark Angel), The Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle (the last of which I read ''long'' before the television series started).

Anyway, I have a couple of questions about one of my favourite characters - Bonnie.

Firstly, her family. We know that Bonnie has several sisters; Mary, one that went to college, and presumably another one as implied by the use of the phrase "one of Bonnie's sisters" when referring to Mary. Could you tell me what the other sisters are called? And also the parents names and a bit about them - both are descended from Druids, Mrs. McCullough's mother tells us in After Hours. So do they know about Bonnie's abilities? Are any of her sisters psychic?

Thank you so very much, both for answering this question and for writing all of your masterpieces.

When Lisa signed the contract 20 years ago, she was a new author and didn't understand that by signing that contract she would be giving away all her rights as an author. Usually agents explain this type of thing to the authors. However, Lisa's agent didn't explain it either.

Sadly, there is nothing she can do about those contracts now. Fortunately, she has a different publisher and a different type of contract for all her other fabulous series. A situation like this will never happen with them. And now that she knows better she will never sign a contract like the ones she did for The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle.

I hope this answered your question.

I know you cannot write the VD series anymore, but would you ever write a new series without using the premise of the VD, TWILIGHT totally was inspired by you and the world knows her story, as an aspiring author I have come to realize not many books are original its the twist that makes novels unique based on an existing idea, I think if a test was done in which five authors got the same premise for a book I would bet the story would be so different, what do you think and I apologize ahead of time for mentioning TWILIGHT, I was so bad I got kicked off the main fan site for defending you, I said sorry and learned my lesson not a good way for me to behave since I am a writer... lol because things may come back to bite me, and sometimes the best words are the ones not spoken.

The Vampire Diaries in order are as follows
The Awakening
The Struggle
The Fury
Dark Reunion
Nightfall
Shadow Souls
Midnight

Dear Jane,
When i was younger i read Twilight, fell in love with Edward. Then i read Vampire
Diaries and Damon just swept me away with his character. Now my mom is reading Twilight and is love with Edward. Never in my young adult life would i have thought that i would be argueing with my own mother about who is the better and hotter Vamp.*shakes head* THEN my lil sis got into the TV series and is now obsessed with Damon. We sometimes fight over who gets to touch the poster of the Salvtore brtohers we have on our closet door. My mom then joins in and sais "Well my vampire sparkles!" we both look at her and laugh. Jane you bring my family together, well Damon does, strange. I hope you will coutinue on your creativity.

Dear LJ Smith,
First off, thanks for writing your books. They are wonderful and meaningful and even though they are fantasy I think they capture the beautiful things in the world such as love and friendship and so on and so forth. I have read and reread all of your books, I like them all and I havethem all besides a few. Anyway, what i wanted to say was, I am so disappointed that you can no longer write the secret circle and vampire diaries books. That is so unfair. I am a writer too and if i ever got published and somebody took my story away from me and made it their own, i'd feel used and violated. This is getting a little long but i just wanted to say i'm sorry. I look forward to reading your new books that are actually written by you. Sorry if i railed on and on.

I'm not sure if Lisa plans to do a sequel to Dark Visions. If she does, it wouldn't be for quite awhile because she is currently working on Strange Fate, The Last Lullaby, and Eternity. When she finishes them she does have a sequel to The Forbidden Game Planned.

Hi Lisa,
Just wanted to say how devastated I was when I downloaded my new Secret Circle and found that you hadn't written it! I understand your need for privacy, and inability to comment on the matter... but, I have to say, I started reading your work 20 years ago, when I was but 13 years old. I started with The Secret Circle, TVD, and Night of the Solstice.

How excited was I to see the Vampire Diaries converted to television, I was less so when I found how different the Secret Circle was.. but, thank you just the same for creating such riveting stories.. they nurtured my love of reading when I was a kid.

Thanks :)

Lisa doesn't have any sort of "deal" with a specific website for selling her books. But just as a fan speaking from personal experience, Amazon has all of her books. I've had good luck with them. If you type "L. J. Smith" in the search bar, all of her books will come up. Unfortunately, the ghostwritten books will come up too. If you are wanting to avoid those, check the cover for "Created by L.J.Smith." That means she didn't write them.

The Book Depository also has all her books and has a larger shipping area. I hope this helps. Happy reading!! :-)

Dear Ms. Smith,
First, let me congratulate you on a job well done on all your books. I've read all of them. They are so well-written and so thrill-packed I can never seem to get myself to put them down. I am sad though that you can't write anymore of Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle books. But I guess it's all right, considering you did such a great job on them. Thank you so much for even writing them in the first place!
I know you're currently working on the last Night World book. I can't wait for it!
What I really wanted to ask about though was something you mentioned about a sequel to Forbidden Games: Rematch. I just want to express my huge excitement at just the title! You wouldn't believe how much I loved that book. I know what happened with Julian but is there any possible tiny ember of hope that he'll come back? He was my favourite character so I can't help but hope.
Thanks again, Ms. Smith, for all your hard work.

There isn't a publication date for Strange Fate, yet. Lisa has said that it will likely be 1000+ pages. Even though, The Last Lullaby started out being a part of Strange Fate, it is now something completely different. For example, it doesn't include any vampires, witches, shapeshifters, etc.

In book 1, the cover girl is obviously Poppy. Book 2 is Rashel. The only one who has me stumped is Book 3's cover girl. It can't be Jez or Keller and I doubt it's Maggie. Who else could it be? Iliana? She's not the main character in Witchlight though...

HI, I have been a huge fan of yours for the last 15 years. I have read and loved all of your series, however Vamp Diaries will always be me fav. I loved Vamp Diaires way before that Twilight nonsense. FYI, Elena could totally kick Bella's arse. The reason I'm writing is because when I found out Vamp Diaries was being continued after Dark Reunion I was super excited. I have now read all 3 of the last of the series written by you and even though I still loved the books, the writing style seemed a lot different from the original story almost darker. Even Dark Reunion seemed different from the original trilogy. I was wondering if there was an event or something that happened in the last 16 years that made you put a darker spin on the series? I also want to say that it makes me very angry that your writing privileges for this series and Secret Circle were taken away from you. I hope karma gets the person responsible. Thank you and I cannot wait to read Strange Fate. :)

L.J., you are one of my favorite authors, definitely. I've read Night World, which I loved. I just didn't want them to ever end. BTW: Maggie and Delos was my favorite couple. And I've read TVD. And my favorite bad boy out of all the books, would be Damon! I can't believe you got fired or whatever you wanna call it. It was the worst possible time ever, too. And doesn't it not seem fair that you got fired because you were changing up the same love triangle story, which would be that the good guy always wins? I mean, it's your book, not matter what anyone says. But I love the ones you did write, and it was the best series I'd ever read back then, but it's still one of my favs, along with Night World. Sooooo, keep on writing because you are so amazing!

Miss Smith has never stated exactly why she was let go and I doubt the publishers where very clear with her either. Miss Smith has stated that to this day, unless she was able to go through the writing experience herself, she doesn't know who Elena would have chosen in the end. She did not have a set path for who would be together in the end.

The TV show, TSC, was canceled a couple months ago. The cancelation of the TV did not have to do with The release of the Ghostwritten books, it was canceled due to a dip in the ratings in the middle of the 1st season. Miss Smith does not have any connection to the Television series. Hope this helps :-)

To L.J. Smith, after your last book, The Vampire Diaries, The Hunters, Moonsong was written, the ending seemed like there would be another book. And I do wonder * spoiler alert! * if damon will become a vampire again. But the question I really want answered is... Will there be another book?

L.J. Smith did not write Moonsong or the book before it Phantom. They were written by a ghostwriter. She is no longer writing any Vampire Diaries books. This is explained more at the top of this page. Anyway, L.J. has nothing to do with this series anymore so she won't know if more books are coming out or what is happening in them.

Have you read any of her other series? My favorites are Night World. If you would like to talk about the books she did write you should join the Forum. There are lots of fun things to do and Lisa (L.J. Smith) has answered lots of fan questions there, too. :-)

I live in Beirut Lebanon and you are my favorite author of all time!!!!! I wish you wouldnt have signed that conctract because this library in Lebanon needs more books written by YOU! You are a great author and even though you don't write books anymore, I know you have many ideas of other books in your brain even though you can't share it to the world. I really think of you as someone who is amazing and so intelligent for writing such amazing series that are now on TV series!!! Thats amazing. Lisa is not allowed to write anymore Vampire Diaries at all. Midnight was the last one she was able to write. It was not her choice. It was because of a contract she signed in the 90s.

Are her other books available in Russia? If you can find them, I recommend Night World. That is my favorite series. There are lots of different supernatual creatures in it--witches, shapeshifters, vampires, etc. Are you a Damon fan? If so, you will love Night World characters like Morgead, Quinn, Ash, and Delos. If Stefan is more your type, then characters like Galen and James will be perfect.

I am so angry how you have been replaced by a ghostwriter to continue writing the vampire diaries! When I heard they replaced you I vowed not read any further books and I haven't. I've read so many comments about how the style of writing is different and changed the chemistry between elena and damon! It's so disappointing as you are my favourite author and I loved all of your books...It is not right how you are bind to a contract you signed years ago. I hope that somehow and someday you can get your ownership rights back...For now I will leave it to my imagination what happens next between damon and elana.
Your the best and can't wait to read what else you will be writing.

I know that you had a completely different direction and I believe that it would have been so much better. I am glad that you got to keep the name that you were going to use on the 3rd book in that series to use for your own book. I won't post anything about that book though for those who haven't read it. I have read all of the vampire diaries books (I am so mad about the ghostwriter that is truely terrible), the Secret Circle, and a couple others. Anytime you have a new book out i get sent an email with the details about it! Even though it is the ghostwriter writing the books its still you by heart that the books come from! Thanks to you I can live in a fantasy with your characters and absoutly love you! You inspired me to start writing a book my self that is a teen romance type with so magical creatures in the mix! (; thank you so much for just writing your amazing books and giving me the oppertunity to read them! You are truly my idol when it comes to reading and books! I started reading so much more after i started your books and i thank you for that!

Nothing happened. Lisa just hasn't finished writing the book yet. Many sites are posting incorrect publishing dates. I'm not sure why. Maybe they are just using random dates as place holders. I even saw a site that gave a date in 2030. The bottom line is don't believe any publication date for Strange Fate unless it is posted on this site. When there is a real publication date there will definitely be a HUGE announcement here.

Hi! I have read the Vampire Diaries books at lest five or six times, and it kills me to know that you aren't allowed to write then any more. I know that a lot of people have been constantly asking you and reminding you about this. I hope I'm not being pushy or annoying by asking this, but this question has been driving me crazy for over a year. Even though you are not allowed to publish any more books about The Vampire Diaries, but that does that mean fanfiction is out of the question. If you write it for nonprofit, then is there a possibility to write your story the way you wanted it? Would you at least be able to write a oneshot fanfic about how you would have end the story?

I was wondering if you are happy with the way the TV show for the Vampire Diaries turned out. If you are, how do you think the director and producers could add more and make it a little better? I also wanted to know if you are able to interact with the cast. You see, I am only 11 and look up to the characters in your books and the actors on the show, and I was wondering if you could send them the message and tell them to contact me via email if possible since I don't have a facebook or twitter account and I wanted to say thank you for being who you are to write the books because they have changed many lives, including mine.
Thank you for your time.

Firstly thanks for all the wonderful books you have written. You have truely been an inspiration for alot of people, including me. :)
Okay, here is my question: I have read all the comments and questions on this forum and one thing that strikes clear is that alot of fans are adamant in not reading the books written by the ghostwriter for VD and the Secret Circle. I just wan to know if you people are aware of the sales for the Hunters trilogy? Surely they must have declined and the publisher's are aware of this? in that sense, will it be possible for LJ Smith to continue with the books?
I have seen so many people that are enraged at the way she was treated. Surely the saying gets measured in this case "Power in numbers".
So sorry for my essay, and sorry if i poking my nose where it doesnt belong...

When there is a real publication date it will be posted on this site. I think either the print version will come out first or at the same time as the audio. She wants to keep both The Vampire Diaires AND The Secret Circle, but due to a contract she signed years ago, her publishing company is taking away her ability to write those books and giving the series to ghostwriters to write-- despite her pleas that she will write the books their way. The publishing company only cares about money so they want to try and make the books more like the show :/

She is not able to write the Vampire Diaries anymore either. The Return: Midnight, was the last book that was actually written by LJ. Originally, there were only 4 books in TVD, but with the success of Twilight, the publishers approached Miss Smith asking her to write more books for the series, they didn't approach her about TSC. For those 2 series the publishers had to approach HER since THEY hold the rights.

Hello

I have read all of your books and love them all. I was so shocked to hear you wouldn't be writing anymore of my favorite books. I read one of the ghostwriters books and did not like where the story is heading, i will not be reading anymore of them. i very much look forward to reading all of your future books. I hope you will be writing a new and better series then the ones you are no longer allowed to write. A real L. J. Smith Fan.

Hello Lisa,
please help me, I'm 16, I want to become a writer. eet I turn to you a famous writer who has successfully been able to take in the story that I could read a whole book ...
I just finished a novel about vampires, but I do not know how to find the plot, and I feel I copy your style ... I can not seem to find my writing style.
How to do please ....

She is very close to completing it, there is no date yet, there will not be a date until it is in the publishers hands. I have personally been waiting since the 90s and will continue to wait. I would rather her take her time and get it right than rush her. She had a 10 year hiatus due to writers block that stemmed from very serious personal loss and then she came back to writing to only feel the sting of loss again. Good things come to those who wait.

I probably found out about this late and dont know when it happened, but I'm big on "Power to the People!" and was wondering if there was anything we all could do? I don't want to read the rest of the books if they are not written by you. Same with the Secret Circle. Im sure most TVD fans agree with me. Its not the same if the books were not written by you and I dont think they should be able to do that. I liked Bamon and everything you were doing with the books. Any way we could protest this?

Unfortunately there is nothing to be done besides fans not buying the ghostwritten books. Many fans realized that she didn't write all the books until after they were purchased. The only way to reach these companies are their wallets and I think too much damage has been done to the stories that she could do anything with either if they have them back to her. The publishing house got its money already, so I believe it's gone last the point of no return.

Hi LJ,

I am a public school teacher also. I have a question whose answer I couldn't find in my google research. This past weekend my church pastor said that you had an interview with ABC news a bout your Vampire Diaries series, that you said the idea came to you in a dream with someone talking to you, and that later the someone was much less nice (even demonic). I would live to find more information on this. Is it even accurate? Can I find that interview anywhere?

Thanks so much for your time,
Joe

I believe you pastor was very mistaken. She took the story for an adult vampire novel she had previously been working on to write the series. None of her posts blogs our official interviews have ever mentioned anything like that. If the interview is not this site or linked to the publisher, it is not real.

If your pastor took the answer to the question Simon & Schuster had asked: Q. "How would you describe your life in only 8 words?" A. "A girl who grew up possessed by magic." He was twisting words and taking them out of context unfortunately. Source: http://authors.simonandschuster.com/L-J-Smith/1080959/author_revealed

Hi, L.J. Smith,
My name is Deanna and I just really, really wanted to tell you how much I love ALL of your stories. I've read them all (with the exception of Secret Circle because I haven't been to a bookstore in a long time). I loved Vampire Diaries, sadly I don't like the show because they changed the original story which I don't like, but I watched the Secret Circle show which I like, at least until I read the books. I have read The Forbidden Game, Dark Visions and all of The Night World series OVER AND OVER. And every time I do manage to go to place where they sell books I always search for anything I haven't read by you. Actually, your my favorite author and always have been, and probably always will be. Reading your stories made me inspired to write. I'm only seventeen, but I hope to become as good of a writer as you someday. :) and I can't wait until Strange Fate comes out....and the other story you are writing that was originally part of Strange Fate.

She is very close to completing it, there is no date yet, and there will not be a date until it is in the publishers hands. Only trust dates you seen on THIS WEBSITE. Sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble use "Dummy Dates". NOTE: The "dummy Dates" you see on those sites DO NOT COME FROM MISS SMITH and NEVER HAVE. In a recent email response to a fan, Miss Smith hopes that Strange Fate will be ready and out sometime next year. Also, on her about section on Twitter she has "working on Last Lullaby & Strange Fate 2014".

Not until a company that produces movies or Television shows picks up the title to adapt it to a screen play. Writing Screenplays is quite different than writing books, so she would need someone else to adapt it.

I would first like to say I am so very sorry that you were not able to continue on with The Vampire Diaries. When I first heard the news I was upset and questioned whether or not I should continue to read the books, but I pushed through them and I must say that anyone who has read your writing can DEFINITELY tell the difference between your work and that of the "ghost writer". I have also read The Forbidden Game and absolutely fell in love with the story. I constantly find myself scanning the shelves in libraries and book stores for YOUR books. Thank you for giving others the opportunity to step into these worlds that you have created. I've not been able to put my copy of your books down since I bought them four years ago!

Hi,

You mentioned reading The Vampire Diaries and The Forbidden Game. Have you read any of Lisa's other books?

My personal favorites are the Night World series followed closely by The Night of the Solstice and Heart of Valor. Night World is unique because each book is a separate story but also ties into a larger plot. I have never read a book with so many layers that are so skillfully intertwined. This series has many different types of supernatural creatures including vampires, shapeshifters, and witches to name a few. If you love bad boys like Damon you will love characters like Quinn, Ash, and Delos. If Stefan is more your type, then you will definitely fall in love with characters like James and Galen.

You should join the Forum, if you haven't already. Lisa stops by whenever she can and there is also a section where she has answered questions from fans.

I am slightly confused I thought that The Vampire Diaries: Destiny Rising was the last vampire diaries book, now I see that there is another one? The Salvation: Unseen, is that right after the last one? and also are there going to be any more secret circle books after Temptation? I know your not writing them but if you could please let me know that would be great. Are you still working on Strange Fate? I haven't heard anything about it in a while. Other than saying that Lisa didn't write them, it is against the rules to talk about the ghostwritten books.

Lisa is still working on Strange Fate and there is no publication date, yet. I think some sites have a crazy publication date like 2030. That is completely inaccurate.

Hi,
I don't think Amazon makes any of their Kindle World books available in paper form. But you can still read Kindle books if you don't have a Kindle. Here is a link for a free download through Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000493771

It will allow you to read Kindle books on your computer, phone, or iPad. I hope this helps. :-)

Ok, I know this isn'tthe Vampire Diaries, but is there any way that you might, in t4he future, make some more Secret Circle books? Because i think taht it would be really cool if you could do another part of the books where the circle are adults and stuff & there kids are being hunted for being witches & stuff. So is there any way something like that might happen in the future? It would be really cool, in my opinion!:)
