The Forbidden Game

on 12 August 2010. Posted in Booklist

My other trilogies (the bestselling The Forbidden Game and the #1 New York Times Bestseller Dark Visions)  are pretty straightforward, both being repackaged in single, long books by Simon & Schuster. Book_TheForbiddenGame_Vol1AThe Forbidden Game, Volume I: The Hunter, Pocket Books, 1994  (New York Times Bestseller!)
Jenny wants to get her boyfriend, Tom, a special game for his birthday party.  However, she can’t help but be fascinated by the boy with the white-blond hair who sells her a strange game as a present.  It turns out that the boy, Julian, is the youngest of those from the Shadow Lands, a race of evil beings who live invisibly just beside our own world.  Once Jenny opens the game, she is in his land.  Julian is determined to seduce her, but he has to work by a set of inflexible rules, only touching Jenny where she has reached for him.  In the fantasy house that Julian has created, where everyone at the party must face their greatest fear, Julian himself is Jenny’s worst nightmare. . . and maybe her dream lover, as well.

Book_TheForbiddenGame_Vol2AThe Forbidden Game, Volume II: The Chase, Pocket Books, 1994 (New York Times Bestseller!)
Jenny begins to get terrifying phone calls and soon it’s clear that Julian is loose is the real world.  More and more, Jenny falls under his spell, allowing herself the freedom to do as she likes, no matter the consequences.  It seems that Jenny has chosen Julian over Tom.  But then her friends are disappearing, sucked into the Shadow Lands, paper dolls left in their places.  Can Jenny outwit Julian without giving in to his demands entirely?

Book_TheForbiddenGame_Vol3BThe Forbidden Game, Volume III: The Kill, Pocket Books, 1994 (New York Times Bestseller!)
Jenny returns to the place where it all began; her grandfather’s house, where as a child she first met the child-Julian.  A door with a strange rune on it opens to the most fantastic creation of Julian’s of all: an empty amusement park that Jenny loved as a child.  Except here, all the rides are deadly.  More, Jenny must survive her confrontations with an increasingly frustrated and determined Julian.  Will he really kill her if he can’t have her?  Jenny forces him to make the choice—and two worlds are changed forever.

SPOLER ALERT!! I loved this series!!!! BUT WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY DID THE BOOK END THAT WAY??? If you are going to end a book that way could you please write another book to go after it? Because that made me really mad and I wanted to throw the book across the room! It was also soooooo sad and romantic because he did it for her. Soooooooooo.... .... if you are reading this, L.J. Smith, could you possibly consider writing another book to go after Volume III: The Kill?

L. J. Smith is considering writing a sequel to the Forbidden Game Trilogy, called Rematch for the time being. (Of course this will be after Strange Fate.)

You can read a synopsis for Rematch in The Forum: Ask L. J. Smith. Are you a member? You have to be one if you want to read it ^^. You can also read a little about the sequel in a reply by L. J. Smith in Guestbook 12. ;-).

Hi,
I just wanted to say that I absoloutly loved these books, they were fantastic, althought I must agree with the comment before mine by Sam F.

I have a question - even though tv has ruined the Vampire Diaries series, would you ever consider having the Forbidden Game turned into a movie trilogy?

I must say that I was rooting for Julian throughout, despite his actions! I'm a sucker for a bad boy!

I also love all your other work, please keep it coming!

Are you a member of The Forum? I would strongy recommend becoming one if you're not. We discuss some of the tings you wrote about and we also play all these funny games.

As for your question: L. J. Smith has mentioned a couple of places on this site that she would love for some of her books to be turned into movies. And The Forbidden Game is one the top of the list! ;-).

I rooted for Julian the entire time too! I could not stand tom! In the sequel she's about to marry tom, so hopefully Julian can change that! :)

+2 # I hope that this time Julian doesn't get smacked down in the end.Guest 2013-01-19 17:25
I have loved this series since I was a girl. Julian was always my favorite character with Dee being my second favorite. I always wanted Julian to win.

He was willing to risk death to protect her from the Shadow Men. I hope that in the rematch Julian is strong, powerful and not mooning.

I would like to see Julian get a fresh start, with a new girl in a new setting. It would sadden me to see Julian turn into a clingy, needy guy who can't let go and be strong enough to find someone he doesn't have to constantly kidnap.

I loved the first book so I hope there's a second. I also think that Jenny will eventually give into Julien. If she doesn't, she's crazy. If I was her, I'd go for him :). If the book was transformed into a film, I would definitely go and see it. It would certainly be a good film if the right people were making it

I think I just my be the oldest poster on this site, going by reading the other comments. I just wanted to say that your books showed me that there was a whole other side of the reading world. I was always an avid reader growing, never without a book of some kind. Then my friend lent me one of your books - The Forbidden Game #1 and I was hooked. Unfortunately, I could not get into the Vampire Diaries - but I loved your Night World series and love to reread all of these even though I am now a mom of four - I even (sometimes) let my nieces borrow them - sometimes. Anyways, thanks for writing great stories and if you do decide to turn them into movies, please be careful who you choose to produce it and don't let them destroy the hearts of the characters.
