L. J. (Lisa Jane) Smith is the New York Times #1 Bestselling author of The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, The Forbidden Game, Dark Visions, and the Wildworld and Night World series.

Hello, and welcome to my website. I have written over two dozen books for children and young adults, and have enjoyed writing every one of them. My favorite people are my readers, each of whom I cherish with deep and lasting affection.  I love to hear from all of you.

I was born in Florida, but my father, who had been a football star at Clemson University, decided to go into business with a partner that required him to move several times and I ended up in southern California when I was a toddler, and I lived there until I moved to the Bay Area of northern California.

I think the truth is that always knew that I would be a writer. That is, I was making up stories and writing "poetry" (very bad) all the time in my head ever since I can remembe
img L.J.Smith Disney Sketchr. I would tell poems to my mother before I learned how to read (I didn't learn until I was in kinergarten) and sometimes she would write them down. That's how I know about them. I was always making up stories and then acting them out with the kids on the block. With my girlfriends I played "princesses" and with my boy friends I played (no, not "doctor") but "space explorer." I was young just around the time of the first manned landing on the moon and "space explorer" was very exciting.

I grew up and although I continued to read children's books, I began to read adult books by the time I was ei
ght or so. But I always believed in one thing, that I was going to find MAGIC. Real, true, flying carpet type magic. My favorite books were the ones about magic. I was sure that I would find it by the time I was nine, because nine was three times three, a very magical number. And when I lived through being nine and didn't find it I was sure that by the time I was twelve (three times three plus three) I would surely find it.

Solstice

But, sadly, I didn't find it by the time I turned twelve. And then I realized that if I wasn't going to just find magic, I would have to make it for myself. And so I started writing short stories, poetry, everything you can name, all about fantasy and magic and science fiction. I began my first book in high school and I finished it in college. I called The Night of the Solstice and I found an agent in a friend of the woman who typed up my manuscript. This agent only sold books as a sort of hobby, and was not very knowledgeable about contracts, but she sent my book to MacMillan Publishers Ltd., where it was (after a rewrite) taken on and published. It got stellar reviews but due to a hideous cover and being mis-categorized as a middle-grade book rather than YA, it didn’t sell well until after The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening came out. Then it became a bestseller, much to my surprise.

I live in the Bay Area of California, with a backyard that is full of flowers, which I adore, especially with many different shades of roses.

I love to visit my friend Toni's little cabin in the Point Reyes National Seashore area, which has lots of trees, lots of animals, lots of beaches to walk on, and lots of places to hike. Once, while hiking, I saw a snow-white buck which allowed me to follow it nearly half a mile.

A militant optimist, I’m also part of the Velociraptor Sisterhood (a fancy way of saying that I like to read, write and discuss books with strong female characters). I have traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East. The two countries I love to visit most are Great Britain, with its historic monuments and amazing country landscapes, and Japan, with its bustling urban life and exquisite mountain scenery.

I am glad I just read this because I was looking at the stephan diaries and debating on buying them. if LJ Smith did not write them then I will not buy them. I am appalled that they would do that to her.

Hi

The V.D's and secret circle was taken away from her.
Since stefans diaries has come into play due to show - this was never given or taken from Lisa.
Lisa herself has said she did not have the to write them in the time required for publishing purposes.
There are no bad reasons or foul play here - V.D & Secret Circle is a different matter.
Please boycott Phantom

I thought the same thing, but if you like the TVD TV show you should read the Stefan's Diaries books. I like them. You just have to basically make the separation of the two series, because they are almost two different series, the TV show and its books and the original TVD books. I like both, they each hold a special place in my heart.

It's up to you to do the rest of The Vampire Diaries, only she knows how to give the magic and excitement to the story ... the "mask" forward you will see and feel that she is not to write, you must have all rights to write this story, and it is thanks to her that she has become so famous ... :-)

As an artist myself I think it's sad that LJ doesnt own all the rights to the world she created, however I understand what it's like to be starting out. When you're given a commission you do your best to fill it. I wonder if she ever imagined the furor her "dreams" would cause? Thanks LJ.

I have been a Vampire Diaries fan since day 1 and I am so disapointed that Lisa Jane Smith will no longer be writing the saga. For me the story will forever be incomplete. I will continue to read everything Mrs. Smith will publish. I will not however encourage Alloy Entertainment. I hope that this situation does not reoccur with her other series.

Not writing any more Secret Circle? *wails is sorrow* This hurts me deeply. The Secret Circle was my favorite and I always felt that there was more to the story. I am sorry to hear this and it must be terrible for Lisa to have these intimate pieces of her taken away. That settles it for me, I won't buy anything produced by Alloy/Harper anymore.

The same thing that happened with TVD happened with TSC. Lisa did not choose any of this to happen and fought it all she could. It is the decision of Alloy. Fortunately, those are the only series that Alloy is a part of. Lisa has full rights to all her other series. Nothing like this will happen to her again.

The Secret Circle has been my favorite series for the past TWENTY YEARS! What has been done to Lisa is despicable. I can't even begin to express how excited I was when I saw a new one was written! DON'T waste your money on it, LJ Smith fans. You WILL be able to tell it is not her work. My copy is going in the trash. I will contact the company and also write a very negative review on Amazon so that my fellow fans will not be duped as I was.

Will they let Lisa keep this series and not rip it out from under niether her like they did with VD and TSC? Because I think thats just wrong on so many levels. It was her imagination that gave those charactors life. Without her there would be no TV show or some other publishing company making money off her ideas. She should be the one that gets recognize, not them.

Don't worry. What happened with TVD and SC will not happen with any of Lisa's other books. They are with a different publisher and have a different kind of contract. Lisa has full author rights for her other books.

You are right there are many differences between the books and the TV show. That is because Lisa has absolutely no say as to what happens in the show. She also has no say in what happens in TVD after Midnight or any Secret Circle sequels. Alloy has taken the books from her and given them to a ghostwriter. Any complaints you have about this are because of Alloy, not Lisa.

It's another way to see the stories.

When I first thought of getting into the TV series, I had to brace myself. I literally forbid myself to watch the show when The Vampire Diaries hit the TV scene. I didn't want to see the story I LOVED get . . . mistranslated. With books, you do the imagination. With TV/movies, you're presented with the imagination. Two seaons later, I'm watching all the episodes and LOVE IT!!!

What I finally did was I told myself, don't expect the book. Expect some . . . "essance" of the book, but it will NOT, nor EVER will be the book.

The TV series surpise me, except Secret Circle. I'm barely hanging on to it I'm so disappointed with it.

The contract that Lisa signed when she was a new author had a "work for hire" clause in it. That meant that Alloy had the right to choose who would write the series. They could use the stories and the characters that Lisa created. Lisa didn't fully understand what this clause meant and her agent did not explain it. Alloy has chosen to replace Lisa with a ghostwriter for Vampire Diaries after Midnight and any Secret Circle sequels. Although she tried to fight this decision, there is nothing she can do about it.

All of her other series are with a different publisher and have different contracts so they will not suffer the same fate.

I do agree that it would be wicked to see all of the amazing adventures and soulmates bonding on the big screen however I would be afraid that the movies quite simply wouldnt live up to the books. Everyone's imagination is different so I'm certain different people interpret these stories in different ways and enjoy them for different reasons. Putting them on the big screen could amaze some and disapoint others. Just an opinion :P

That's too bad. L.J.'s voice is so brilliant and unique, I wish it could stand on its own and not be a cash-grab for these big companies. Her writing is beautiful, and I'd rather it be special and in short supply then be turned into something that isn't as good, but there's more of it. Sigh.

What has happened to the VD books is absolutely disgraceful. I am so disppointed that we will never get to find out what would have happened to our favorite characters if L.J. had been allowed to finish what she started.

It must be devastating for L.J. and my heart goes out to her that the awesome world and amazing characters that she has created and gifted to us, have been ripped away from her in this way.

Please keep writing L.J. and don't lose faith.

We, your fans, know your writing and love how you pull us all so deeply into the worlds you create.

In my opinion, it is certainly not worth reading books written by a fake.

Personally I would rather have no ending to the stories than have one written by someone that didn't create them but would have loved the chance to continue reading on with L.J. as the author. That's why I am so, so disappointed.

I just joined this forum today. After reading all of this and realizing Lisa will no longer write secret circle and VD or Stefan diaries I feel betrayed. However it does make sense to me now I can tell what she wrote and did not, I'm actually a little relieved after reading phantom to know she is still the author I knew her to be and although this must be a very hard situation for her I know she will create more series that her fans will fall in love with. She is a literary genius and I have confidence she will come through this mess better than ever. Lisa you have all of your fans support and encouragement. I once was an avid television watchers when I was young, but as I got older I stopped watching t.v. because of the dull programs in our industry today. That was until I watched seasons 1 and 2 of Vampire Diaries on Netflix. I watched a entire season on my off day. I was so impressed with the characters, the quick pace of the show, and I thought it was wonderful that the show doesnt linger on one topic. I have never brought a t.v. show in my life, but here to say that I will be spending my hard earned money to buy all of the seasons of this show. You have an amazing mind, and your writing is intelligent, and thought out very intricately. The stories are cohesive, and I just keep coming back to more and more shows. I wish I had your ability to write so cleverly. Thank you for giving me back t.v. L.J. Smith.

I just have to say that I find it unethical for a publisher to use the name if the work inside is not created by the author. It's very misleading to the public and if the work is not well written then it reflects bad on L.J. Smith. As an avid reader of her works I am disgusted on her behalf.

I feel like a lot of the other readers here that the fact the Alloy pretty much took two of my fav. series from a great writer like L.J. Smith and handed them over to a no name writer is highly upsetting. I used to look forward to the new releases but the only ones i will look forward to now are the books truly written by the authors i love

Lisa isn't writing any more VD or SC books because Alloy decided to give these series to a ghostwriter. They had a legal right to do this because of a "work for hire" clause in the original contracts. As to why they would choose to replace a best-selling author with an unknown author, no one knows for sure. There has been speculation that it was because of a disagreement over the endgame or an attempt to make the books like the show. I believe Alloy was just looking for a way to keep more of the money from the books for themselves.

Maybe someone somewhere is handing out awards for the stupidest decision. If so, Alloy has my vote.

i want LJ back :(

When I first heard of this, which was a while back, I was shocked that something like this could happen to L.J. Smith. Now though, I like to think L.J finished the Vampire Diaries anyway in Midnight. It was an ending and a beginning, it leaves so many possibilities to what could happen next, and in a way I'm happy and couldn't have imagined a better ending/ cliff-hanger. We can make up our own ending with our own imagination, the new books though will be cheap knock-off that everyone will be able to notice is obviously not L.J's writing. It's Alloy is the one who should sorry, they practically lost money.
I'm really, really looking forward to her new continuation of the Night World Series (Strange Fate), and the possibility of the continuation of the Forbidden Game! Yay! I can't wait for new series and such, but will not pay attention to Alloy and their traitorous books.
Oh and I hope L.J. will get better, I heard she's really sick :(

How dare they do that, I mean come on the work of course will not be the same because some other "author" instead of the ORIGINAL wrote it. Really how can you rip off someone like this by taking their original characters and their story and tring to make it your own. Your betraying L. J. Smith and her fans. Alloy sucks and just to let you know I will not continue to read any books that aren't written by Smith herself.

I ended up on google looking at reviews of the book and of course it didnt meet my expectation because your not writing it . this hurts me .Reading this series is my only escape from reality and I guess there is no longer a escape . L.J. Smith wrote the following books from The Vampire Diaries--The Awakening, The Struggle, The Fury, Dark Reunion, Nightfall, Shadow Souls, and Midnight. Any other Vampire Diaries books were not written by her. The Secret Circle books The Initiation, The Captive, and The Power were written by L. J. Smith. However, the new books in that series will also be written by a ghostwriter.

All of L. J. Smith's other amazing series have a different type of contract and will never fall into the hands of a ghostwriter. :-)

I hope this cleared up your confusion.

Dearest Lisa,

Hello! I am a huge fan of "The Vampire Diaries" & have been for quite some time since I have all the books & the first 2 seasons on DVD but not only that but I am a bit confused to the fact that I am now currently reading the trilogies of "The Vampire Diaries - The Hunters" series but a question comes to mind which is the following - Is the next book going to be called "Destiny Rising"?. The reason why I have asked is because I have a feeling that, that is going to be the title of the next book after "Moonsong?. Please do let me know.

Sincerely,

Since Lisa no longer writes The Vampire Diaries, this is not the best place to ask questions about The Hunters series. She does not get even the tiniest say in them. I do not have the foggiest idea of what the next book is called, nor do I care since I refuse to read ghostwritten books. If you want to read something better written and less confusing, try one of her other amazing series. My favorites are the Night World series.

I think it is great when someone thinks enough of an author to make their book into a film, but more times than not they end up raping the original story. Some don't even follow the same story line. I find it criminal that she is not going to be the writer for her creation. No matter what the deal or circumstances, it's stealing the characters and her imagination from her.

I know they, by law, could do this but this was morally wrong. To tell someone that they cannot continue working on something they created, that was a part of them, is very wrong and should not go unpunished. Lisa doesn’t write for the TVD show. She never has. And she gets absolutely no say in anything about it. Stefan’s Diaries and the new Vampire Diaries are written by a ghostwriter. The Vampire Diaries that Lisa wrote are The Awakening, The Struggle, The Fury, Dark Reunion, Nightfall, Shadow Souls, and Midnight. Have you read those? They are totally different from the show, but they are much better in my opinion. I think if you like the show, you will love the books.

L.J. Smith,

I am a very new fan of yours (literally, I just started and finished The Secret Circle trilogy yesterday), & I love your work and writing style! I was amazed to find that you also wrote other popular series & I can't wait to start them as well.
After finishing TSC trilogy, I was going to continue but noticed that it was credited differently and the style & voice of the story was completely different so I didn't end up purchasing it. After finding your site, it made sense.
I know that you are under contract to cease writing your own series (which I think is ludicrous) or able to comment on any further works. However, how do you feel about ghostwriters in general? What advice would you give your fans about continuation of a series that the original author did not write? Would you continue to read, or would that be akin to betraying the original author? *Note, this question has nothing to do with any of your previous works & is purely hypothetical*

+1 # Hi Devin,Christina Crowley 2012-05-16 10:44
I can’t speak for Lisa (L.J. Smith), but I can give you my opinion as a fan. Ghostwriters in general are not bad people. There are several reasons why a series may be continued with a ghostwriter. Sometimes the author chooses to pass their series to a ghostwriter when they have satisfactorily completed the story they wanted to tell but the publisher still wants more books. A ghostwriter may even continue a series after an author has died. In these circumstances, I wouldn’t have a problem reading a ghostwritten book. However, when a series is given to a ghostwriter when the author still wants to write the books they created, then I refuse to read the ghostwritten material out of support for the author. Secondly, I would never continue to read a series that I didn’t enjoy just for the sake of closure. I would rather leave questions unanswered and create my own ending in my head.

Lisa has asked her fans not to boycott the ghostwritten books. I believe that is very classy of her. However, I cannot and will not honor that request. It would mean going against everything I stand for. So personally, I have been and will continue to boycott all ghostwritten books in The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle series. What you do is your choice.

If you are wondering what series to read next, I highly recommend Night World. They are my favorites. They have vampires, witches, shapeshifters, etc. You should also join the Forum. It is a wonderful place to interact with other fans and keep up to date on all the books Lisa has planned.

Hi,

I don't know if this has already come up or not but I'd like to make a suggestion. Is there any way to maybe create a petition directed specifically to Alloy, to review the contract with Lisa and give her back the rights to TVD and TSC? I mean, would it help at all if it were to be done?

Thanks,
Suzanne

There have already been a couple petitions started and letters written directly to Alloy with no response. The only other course of action we are left with is to refuse to buy ghostwritten books. I know Lisa has said not to boycott, but I just don't see myself giving my money to a company I don't respect. After all, it is our right as consumers to buy/not buy products. Regardless of what you decide, spread the word so others can make informed decisions.

Something positive everyone can do is read Lisa's other series and anything new she writes. My favorites are Night World.

That's a real pity!

I of course feel the same way you all do. I just finished watching the TV series and am gutted that it's been cancelled. I will definitely buy her books and not the ones written by ghost writers, as well as spread the word!

I've also shared the websites for the petitions for a second season of TSC :)

Thanks!

I bought and read the first 4 and they were just boring. I kind of had to force myself through them. When i read a book, It usually has a plot and an outcome at the end. well, this has the plot and everything, but there is no end. each book is kind of a continuence so I only pushed myself through each book trying to find out was the outcome. by the end of the fourth, realizing they I had read yet another book and not seen an outcome, i gave up and quit buying them. I feel as if they took one book and split it into 5 to squeeze as much money as they can from the fans. The books I've read with L.J. Smith. I've read several of her books tgat are 3 stories combined into one if you want to buy them that way instead of seperately, saving an average of $20. That makes me feel as if L.J. Smith values her fans and isn't just trying to squeeze money from us. Instead, finding ways to save us money by combining books. I thinks she's great. I love the show, so I hope it doesn't become boring 2

Lisa didn't release her version of Phantom because she isn't allowed to.

Fortunately, we will be able to enjoy more of Lisa's writing in the new books she is working on. They are completely unrelated to The Vampire Diaries or The Secret Circle.

Lisa is currently working on Strange Fate, The Last Lullaby, and Eternity.

For a sneak peek of The Last Lullaby go here http://74.220.217.129/www/stories/sneak-peeks/54-brionwys-lullaby

Lisa answers many interesting questions and gives a synopsis of The Last Lullaby here http://74.220.217.129/www/images/stories/downloads/LJaneSmith_OverTwoDozenThingsYouNeverKnewAbout_LJSMITH.pdf

Here is a link to some more about Eternity http://www.ljanesmith.net/www/forum/future-books/19034-eternity#19100

When she finishes those she is planning a sequel to The Forbidden Game.
Here is her synopsis. http://www.ljanesmith.net/www/forum/ask-l-j-smith/16342-the-forbidden-game-sequel

As you can see, Lisa is very busy! And we have many amazing books to look forward too.

Your books are among some of my absolute favorite. So when I did a search and found a NEW Secret Circle, I was beyond thrilled, as it's my favorite. BTW, I am 33 and have read these books over and over and over. I immediately ordered the new book from Amazon. However, as I began reading I noticed the characters were definitely not acting as they previously had. This is when I rechecked the cover. Lo and behold, CREATED by L.J. Smith! WRITTEN by Aubrey Clark? I don't think Ms. Clark even READ the trilogy. I'm ready to throw this book right in the trash, where it belongs. I am so sorry for Lisa and my fellow bibliophiles that this series has been defiled. I will absolutely write a scathing review on Amazon. Alloy Entertainment can kiss my @rse.

Lisa is not writing anymore books in The Vampire Diaries or The Secret Circle series because she is not allowed to. The new books in each of these series are written by a ghostwriter and will not be discussed on this site.

Just in case you are wondering which books in each series were written by L.J. Smith, here is a list.

The Vampire Diaries:
The Awakening
The Struggle
The Fury
Dark Reunion
The Return: Nightfall
The Return: Shadow Souls
The Return: Midnight

The Secret Circle:
The Initiation
The Captive
The Power

Lisa is currently working on Strange Fate, The Last Lullaby, and Eternity.

I bought the first two Stefan's diaries and to be honest they sucked :/ so i stopped reading them. I am suuppppeerrr bummed out that alloy entertainment fired her from the vampire diaries! I don't understand HOW or WHY they would do such a thing! I was so excited for the next book to come out and I bought every vampire diarie book on the release date in hardcover because I was so excited each time to continue readin the series and i was waiting for phantom to come out and then I found out about her being fired D: I love Tvd and I just didn't bother to buy it as soon as it came out because I didn't want to waste my money on a crappy ghostwritten book again...sooo I finally decided I would take it out from the library because I am still dying to know what happens next and at least I won't be wasting my money and supporting alloy entertainment by buying it so I'm gonna read it and give it a try still. Has anybody else read it? What did you think? Good? Bad? Howdoesit compare to other Tvd?

I used to hate reading so my mom would try and get me books that would perk my interest..so a few years ago she bought my the first night world book but I never read it. One Christmas I got the kindle as a present so I thought I would maybe look into books that would make me want to read. I absolutely fell in love with your Night World series and finished them maybe two years ago. Just a few months ago..I was cleaning out closets and found the book my mom bought me. My jaw hit the floor and I just started laughing to myself. Guess parents really do know best :) thanks for the great writing and amazing worlds you create that I get sucked into :)...Not literally like The Forbidden Game :)

They did take the original 7 books LJ wrote and repackage them with the TVD show characters on them. A rule of thumb to use here is if it says "Written by" it was written by Miss Smith. If it says "created by" it is ghostwritten. When buying books online, you have to actually look at the picture of the cover to see how it is stated. Online, regardless of being ghostwritten, they are listed as being "Written by" Miss Smith.

I've loved her writing since I was a little kid and read the forbidden game series. I never knew that Stefan's diaries weren't written by her. I really hate that I own the series now, particularly since I realised soon after starting the book that the style sounded completely different - plus it seems such a waste to own half a dozen books in a series without wanting to finish it. I loved the first few books in the VD series, and I really want to finish the series in order to get some closure (I can't just stop with a dead Damon) but I hate that the Damon redemption cycle is unlikely to continue.
Why are the taking Secret Circle away from her though? That's insane!

The Secret Circle's rights were owned by the same company as TVD. There was never an exact reason why they took both series away. It could have also been the fact that it is cheaper to pay ghostwriters then a best selling author.

Miss Smith signed a contract due to an "agent" she trusted. She was "young and naive".

There was an interview that used to be linked on this site and I can't seem to find the link through this site atm either. Here is the link to the article by Salt Lake Magazine "The Vampire Diaries creator L.J. Smith on writing and losing the series" http://saltlakemagazine.com/blog/2012/10/27/qa-the-vampire-diaries-creator-lj-smith/

Here is the link to her Bibliography http://www.ljanesmith.net/author/bibliography. LJ had begun writing Phantom and had actually sent a portion of it into the publishing company. The company turned over the work she had submitted to a ghostwriter to complete the book. There are some undertones of Miss Smith's writing in Phantom, but no, she didn't write it. Any book in TVD after The Return: Midnight, including the "diaries" that have stemmed from the show are all NOT written by Miss Smith.

0 # More L.J., Less publisher influenceGuest 2013-07-09 09:28
Hi! After reading a few books by L.J. Smith, starting out with The Secret Circle, I heard hearsay that claimed some of the books written by Smith were not entirely her own, rather the publishers attempted to have a strong influence on her writing. In turn, this lead to the ghost writers for Vampire Diaries and the Secret Circle. I was wondering which books, if any, were minimally influenced by publishers and instead had more of Smith's pure, creative ideas and writing style. I love the conflict filled romances, strong female roles, and how Smith paints stories reflecting that not everything that is bad is evil, just as not everything that is good is pure. You have wonderful ideas, L.J. Smith! Which books do you think truly reflect your initial ideas? Which books are you proudest of?
Thank you!

All books in The Vampire Diaries Series written AFTER The Return: Midnight ARE written by ghost writters as well as the newer Secret Circle books. She was CONTRACTED to write both of those series as a "work for hire" in a packaged book deal. Harper/Alloy have ALWAYS owned the rights to both series, not Miss Smith. If you see "Created By LJ Smith" on a cover, it is ghostwritten, you can see the difference for yourself in author listing on the TVD books that were written after Midnight.

Wow.... It makes soooo much sense now.... I have read almost all of L. J. Smith's books and I felt disconnected when I read the last of Vampire Diaries and wondered what was going on as it did not seem like her writing.... I really did not care too much for it and I thought that was odd as I usually love her work... I have purchased a few of the Stephan's Diaries and same thing... they did not have that pull that her books normally do where I can not put it down once I start reading, so I should of known that they were not written by her... I am a big fan of L.J Smith! So I was stoked when I seen there were new books but now that I know they are ghostwritten I will not bother to purchase them.. :(

Yes, the most recent Secret Circle books are written by Aubrey Clark rather than L.J. Smith. Many books still have her (Ms. Smith's) name on them in large letters, but if you read the small print you will notice it listed as "created by L.J. Smith", rather than having her as the actual author, starting with The Divide. I am interested in reading books by L.J. that were not strongly influenced by her publishers, books that she was free to develop the characters as she desired rather than meet the needs of a publisher/marke ting team. Does anyone have any suggestions?

With the exception of TVD and TSC, LJ owns the rights to all her works. Check out the bibliography tab on this site for a listing of all her works. I personally love all of her series, but The Forbidden Game is my favorite. The Night of The Solstice & The Heart of Valor definitely deserve a read, too. They were her first books. There is no romance in those two, but they are filled with magic and adventure.
